Summary

Scott Fenney is a hotshot corporate lawyer at a big Dallas firm. At 33, in the prime of his life, he rakes in $750,000 a year, drives a Ferrari, and comes home every night to a mansion in Dallas' most exclusive neighbourhood.

He also comes home to one of Dallas' most beautiful women, with whom he has a much-loved daughter, Boo. For Fenney, life could not be better. But when a senator's son is killed in a hit-and-run, Fenney is asked by a state judge to put his air-conditioned lifestyle on hold to defend the accused: a black, heroin-addicted prostitute, a client very different from the people Fenney usually represents. And, more importantly, she is not going be paying $350 an hour for the privilege of his services.

Under fire from all sides, Fenney drafts in a public defender. Yet as Scott prepares to hand the case over to Bobby, he feels increasingly guilty about the path he is taking, because Scott still believes in the principle of justice. The question is: does he believe in it strongly enough to jeopardise everything he holds dear? And to what lengths is the dead man's power-hungry father prepared to go to test Fenney's resolve?

Thoroughly enjoyable

I loved this book, and the narrator made it twice as good. I didn't want to stop listening to it and didn't want it to end. Could we have more unabridged books from this writer please? an absolute winner!

Predictable? No!

Looking for something to satisfy a craving for a good lawyer story with heart without being sickly? - This will do it. Not only will the timbre of the reader prove attractive but also the underlying deeper (OK, not that deep!) message will make you smile - and not wince. Something to make you want to keep the ear plugs in. A good story, well told by a ear friendly voice.

Better than Grisham!

Really enjoyed the plot. Maybe felt a little slow at the beginning but it all came together beautifully at the end. A gripping listen.

Engaging

What made the experience of listening to The Colour of Law the most enjoyable?

Really enjoyed this book - John Grisham (sic) at his best! Kept me engaged throughout and the narration was excellent.

A Jolly Good Listen!

What did you like most about The Colour of Law?

The storey was quite fast paced, it held my interest the whole way through. There were a couple of sad characters but almost all were likeable.

What did you like best about this story?

It's a clssic feel good tale. The little guy is true to his heart and fights corrupt polititians. That doesn't take away from the book, the storey certainly holds it's own.

Which character – as performed by Aileen Gonsalves – was your favourite?

Scott himself was my favourite character, he keeps getting kicked in the teeth but for the sake of his daughter and the daughter of the accused, he battles on.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Finally, a Lawyer with a soul.

Any additional comments?

The narrator of this book is a guy called, Pete Bradbury and he's excellent. The book is listed in Audible as being narrated by Aileen Gonsalves, this is incorrect.

Such a Good Listen

The first time I have read anything by this author, and I loved it.
Like most books, it takes a little time to get into, especially when you have just finished another really good book, it's sometimes hard to let one go and move on, but so glad I did. Just wanted to keep listening to this, which is something few books can achieve for me. I've bought the sequel "Accused" in the hope that this will be as enjoyable.

Background Music

Faint jazz music is audible at stages during the narration just loud enough to ruin the book

High paced thriller

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Highly recommended. Whilst it is a retelling of a classic story it comes from a new angle and adds pace to the story. It also provides surprises throughout.

What did you like best about this story?

The theme is so familiar but also still feels fresh

What does Pete Bradbury bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The story could have been told by anyone as it is inspiring but Pete does a good job of bringing the dramal.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No but serialize in the car to work was perfect

A pedestrian story

A feel good story all about the feelings of the central lawyer character. Very little about actual legal activity. So if you like Mickey Haller and similar give this one a miss.
