Once upon a time, there was a boy who lost his mother.... As twelve-year-old David takes refuge from his grief in the myths and fairytales so beloved of his dead mother, he finds the real world and the fantasy world begin to blend. That is when bad things start to happen. That is when the Crooked Man comes. And David is violently propelled into a land populated by heroes, wolves, and monsters, and begins his quest to find the legendary Book of Lost Things.

This wonderful book takes a series of fairy tales, turns them on their heads and builds them into a marvellous story following the journey of one boy to manhood. It is a story tellers dream and Nick Rawlinson is the ultimate one to tell it. His narration is outstanding, and one of the best I have heard. The emotion and life that he brings to the book is superb.
The twist in the fairy tales that David (the boy) encounters is at times hilarious, and at other times frightening and gory. The story weaves beautifully from one to another and whilst the culmination is inevitable, there is no loss in the telling of it.
Wonderfully written. Superbly read.
Happy, vegetarian, swimming, Spanish learning, walking, knitting, partnered man. Teacher and learner.
I have not finished listening yet because for a change I dont want the experience to end.
The story is gripping and grim, the narration is enthralling as is the story in every sense. Its brutal and kind like all good fairy stories should be.
The 7 dwarves
made me shiver
soon I will have to sit and listen to the end but am putting it off till its dark and cold once again
It took me a while to get into this book. The beginning is very slow and there isn't an ounce of happiness or charisma in it. It is not actually a very happy book at all but once it gets into its stride- around the entrance of the dwarfs in my opinion- it takes on a lyrical charm and charisma. Albeit with some very dark, very very dark at times, subjects wrapped up in a brothers grimm style story. The narrator was perfect casting for this book. I read a review based on the narration which nearly put me off. I am pleased to say they were wrong. The narrator has superb skill and has a tonal quality which suits this story to the tea. He added to the whole experience. You just have to get past the beginning.
A different narrator
The long, laborious, unnecessary pauses for "dramatic" effect put me right off and made me impatient with the narrator. I found myself falling asleep.
I really couldn't get into this book very much and I couldn't help getting the feeling that the author was kind of making it up as he went along.
Some things were very much fantasy novel type cliche's and were not properly worked or thought through. The author seems to have borrowed from numerous other books and added side stories that did nothing to progress the story and merely served to add to the books page count.
What I also struggled with was the wide spread of possible reading ages for this book - from the Disney like fairy tale stuff to some decidedly dodgy subject matter. When I first got it I had thought that it might be something I could let my children listen to but not so at the end.
The narrator is pretty good and does a good job with the characterizations and can raise the tension at the right time. However at other times I did wonder if he was going to fall asleep!
"Strangely good. "
I really did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It gave all my favourite childhood stories a new and interesting twist.
"To all Book lovers ❤️"
The book overall was amazing from start to finish. Great narrator as Nick Rawlinson gives a powerful performance for each of the characters and the overall progression of the story. The story itself had an interesting premise with a very unique twist as we get to know our protagonist through a hero's journey from his introduction to the unknown to his return as a changed man. The supporting cast was amazing along with a great villain. This is a must for the bookaholics and the lovers of fictions, satisfying to the end. 😉😄
