Summary

That Distant Land collects 23 stories, interlinked with each other and with the other published "Port William" novels. The stories, arranged in their fictional chronology (from 1888 to almost the present day), become one sustained work, a new novel that spans the entire life and time involved. The range of this book is extraordinary - it offers rest for the weary, hope for the beleaguered, and strength for everyone else.

Great warmth of writing & also of performance.

This was the first Wendell Berry prose I’d read as I’d previously come across his poetry. Initially, I was slow to be absorbed by the narratives, but once engaged I didn’t want it to end. Berry creates characters of enormous wisdom and integrity - rather the way you wished people could live their lives, but most don’t. Some people might find it too nostalgic for a ‘lost time’ but I was happy to be engulfed by these stories. I’ll leave it a while but will definitely be reading more Wendell Berry.

Voice and writing a perfect contemplative match

Narrator was fabulous--slow and thoughtful as the stories themselves. Stories were not only praise for a nearly lost, contemplative way of life...but a subtle and poignant warning to the fast-paced and violent tendency of modern times. Many thanks to both Wendell Barry and Mr. Kramer.

Beautiful reading

A series of (lightly) linked short stories about a small town and rural community in Kentucky.
The stories progress through most of the 20th century and range from heart warming to heart breaking (and often laugh out loud funny) and are read as beautifully as if Wendell Berry himself were doing the reading.
