Summary

Summer at Fairacre charmingly recounts this bright, bustling season and the problems and possibilities that unfold against the backdrop of roses, skylarks and bees...

Joseph Coggs finds a temporary home in the schoolhouse while his mother is in the hospital. Miss Read’s friend Amy mysteriously disappears. And, perhaps most difficult of all, Mrs. Pringle, the grumpy school cleaner, is unable to work because of her ‘bad leg’. Still, the sounds of children playing and the fragrance of summertime flowers fill the air, as Miss Read shepherds her students and friends through the warm season.

A Gentle Pleasure

I enjoyed this book very much. There is something pleasing and gentle about the Fairacre stories. It was well read by Prunella Scales but I prefer Gwen Watford's narration of the Miss Read books.

brain and soul bliss

I was there, watching motes of dust in the empty classroom. smelling lilac in the warm evenings and dipping my finger into a delicious jar of lemon curd. what is not to love about this book.

Perfect narration

Have listened to a number of the Miss Read books and enjoyed them all, but have to say Prunella Scales’ narration is the one I have enjoyed the most.

Miss Read

I have listen and enjoyed most of the titles by Miss Read. Gwen Watford remains my number one narrator. This was good but not one of my favourites.

Another lovely story from Fairacre

Despite being meaningful and somewhat acerbic and witty, these Fairacre books are like a hug in book form. Gentle tales of times gone by. I utterly love them!

However, I have listened to all the Fairacre books and Prunella Scales is just wrong as narrator. Too upper class sounding, which makes it hard to follow. There are ‘dacks’ instead of ducks for example. She also doesn’t pace her speech as well as the other narrators. My favourite narrator so far is June Barrie.

Intriguing as always

Every picture tells a story! But with these books it's a revelation of rural life

Enchanting, beautiful and funny.

"Summer at Fairacre" is another charming tale of the quintessentially English village and its people, both so gentle and soothing and hilariously acerbic and razor-sharp. I must admit I particularly enjoyed Miss Read's biting remarks, and the books are more acerbic and hilarious as the series progresses. Most enjoyable.

Lovely book.

Really enjoyed this book. Loved all the characters and hearing all about nature and the weather. It was humorous and very entertaining and the narration was brilliant. Nice light hearted book.

Transported to another world of peace and tranquility, but for Mrs Pringle. Sorry to have finished it.
