Brilliant and ambitious dressmaker Marcelline Noirotis London's rising star. And who better to benefit from her talent than the worst-dressed lady in the ton, the Duke of Clevedon's intended bride? Winning the future duchess' patronage means prestige and fortune for Marcelline and her sisters. To get to the lady, though, Marcelline must win over Clevedon, whose standards are as high as his morals are...not.
The prize seems well worth the risk-but this time Marcelline's met her match. Clevedon can design a seduction as irresistible as her dresses; and what begins as a flicker of desire between two of the most passionately stubborn charmers in London soon ignites into a delicious inferno...and a blazing scandal. And now both their futures hang by an exquisite thread of silk...

"Worth the Credit....Fantastic"
Worth the Credit!
I do not know that I could compare this book. But Ms. Chase is right up there (in my humble opinion) with Lisa Kleypas and Mary Balough. Stellar work. I've only had the pleasure of enjoying two of Ms. Chase's books, but I would buy more if they were available on Audible.
Well, Lucy "Errol" was my favorite character and that's saying a lot because Ms Reading was brilliant as the Duke. Lucy was such a charming character "maniuplative little minx" as her mother refers to hear lovingly.
Yes, and I am listening to it again, for the 3 time since my purchase last week.
I LOVE this story, it's believable, entertaining and well written. Let me just say, I would happily purchase the remaining books in the series when they become available. (I'm praying to Audible Gods). Ms. Chase is a fantastic writer, she makes your fall in love with her charachters. I cannot wait to see what happens next!
Please make the rest of Ms. Chase's books available for me to enjoy. I do not have time to read for plesaure as I am a gradute student. But Audio books make it possible for me to read (listen) while driving and working out.
"One of my all-time favorites"
I love this book. The characters are strong and wonderful. The situation in interesting and different. The narrator is really good. Definitely give this one a listen.
"Great performance. Classic plot"
Wonderfully embroidered romance
Lord of Scoundrels of course. Same author, same period atmosphere, with meticulous attention to the details of the culture of the time, same tensions--between classes, and between the sexes. And showing how passion can transcend these differences. With help from plucky, talented, and beautiful heroine, bringing errant aristocrat to heel, using his weak spot for love. The plot also reminds me of Austen's Pride and Prejudice
They will reap what they sew !
Plot very artfully builds to its climax
"The name does the book justice"
The story is a bit Cinderellaish but the heroine kept pushing with one hand and pulling with the other. The draw for the Duke seemed to be her beauty (though apparently not literal) and constant mild though not full rejections but then is this not what draws men anyway? The Duke seemed to have weak morals and could not make up his mind for himself. Lady Clara had to make up his mind for him. It is easy to judge a book because we don’t like the characters or their morality etc. which I feel is unfair. So if we put morality aside was this a good book? I think it was. I liked it enough to want to purchase the next book in the series.
"Started slow, but boy did it grow!"
I love how Loretta Chase builds her characters and that causes the reader to become almost personally involved. You feel the emotions, the stress, the love and the triumphs as the story builds. It's classic "Pride and Prejudice" in the sense of rank being the stumbling block to love. I can't imagine falling in love with someone who can "destroy" your rank in society to the point where someone is willing to give it all up. And that's what this story is about. Can two people look beyond their rank and society for true love? I also love the interaction between the sisters and how they worked their business, especially in the period of history this story takes place.
I love the way Marcelline and her sisters had such a loving relationship and an understanding of each others roles in their business. The each had a strength for their business and they worked it to their advantage. Even Clevedon saw it and admired it.
Marcelline's "Good-bye" to Clevedon in the new shop that he was able to furnish for her home and business after the fire. I also love the scene when she plays cards with him and the bet they made for whether she would go to the big event in Paris.
"It's not just about business..."
I believe next to Juliet Stevenson, Kate Reading does the best reader with so many distinctive voices of the characters. She is wonderful in "Lord Of Scoundrels" and does an excellent job here. The emotions she is able to convey with the characters really draws you in....so grab a Kleenex!
"A mixed baged"
I believe this was my first listen from this author. Lets just say this book was a mixed bag for me. The story is good, but I think it dragged on too long. I loved all of the fashion from the dressmakers. I just felt like it was too long. I will listen to the next book in the series.
"Old tymy love triangle"
I love Loretta Chase's novels. She puts a spin on the regency era that is refreshing indeed.
This book is no expectation. The love between these two, the willingness to sacrifice said love for the sake of honor was angsty but charming
"Great Performance, Disappointing Story"
Normally I can get past old romance tropes and clichés enough to enough a well written historical romance novel. With a very weak plot and characters that are difficult to like (a complete lack of morals is not something to brag about, Noirot.), this one was big let down.
So many people had recommended this novel to me, and after falling in love with Lord of Scoundrels, I didn't hesitate to try this audiobook.Unfortunately, Ms. Chase's talent with storytelling couldn't save this one for me, even when paired with an excellent narration by Kate Reading.
"AMBITION & DUTY CRUMBLES FOR LOVE"
There's something delicious about arrogant, charismatic, handsome, Rakish Dukes that always makes me want to hear about their trials and tribulations before they can gain the love of a patient and deserving woman and when the sexy and nearly betrothed Clevedon meets ambitious and driven Modiste Marcelline in Paris all his well thought out plans for his future are threatened.
However, Marcelline can only allow herself to care about her business but as Clevedon pursues her back to London unwilling to sever their relationship and obvious attraction there's complications, secrets, temptations and a little girl with piercing blue eyes waiting to shake-up his plans and give him a future he never dreamed of having.
This was very much a 'working/upper class divide' listen and, although they were attracted to each other, most of the way through they stopped any sort of romance from starting between them. I thought Clevedon was funny, thoughtful, kind but confused but I couldn't really warm to Marcelline's character with her relentless goal which made her appear to be a bit hard, manipulative and uncaring. However, there was witty banter, humor, passion, sex and a few very touching scenes as well as a betrayal, secrets, a near death, a devastation, a few proposals and a nice Epilogue which made this an enjoyable and entertaining listen.
Worth a credit? Yes and the character development of the drool-worthy Duke more than made up for the manipulative Modiste.
"Very enjoyable series!"
I really got swept away in this one.
Too many of the HRs I've read lately have been too predictable. This one has an actual story to it with great characters and a plot that actually goes somewhere.
Looking forward to the next two books about the other sisters.
