Publisher's Summary

Italy, 1570. The convent of Santa Caterina is filled with noble women who are married to Christ because many cannot find husbands outside. Enter sixteen-year-old Serafina, removed by her family from an illicit love affair. While on one side of the walls, forces in the Church are pushing for change, inside, Serafina's spirit and defiance ignite a fire that threatens to engulf the whole convent.

    "Enthralling"

This is a great audio book if you like fiction with well rounded characters and historical input. It's the story of a young girl forced to enter a convent against her wishes because of her relationship with a musician who is not good enough socially for her. But it's also about the society in which women of all sorts had no option but to live in convents and is also very interesting about the way the different personalities in the convent interacted. All the characters were very well described so you could really believe in them. The ending is good too. It was also very well read so I was gripped by it.

Well conceived and brilliant plot. Historically accurate. A very interesting and exciting account of a young novice and her friendship with an experienced nun who works in the convent as a doctor.

    Story
    "Slow slow"
What did you like best about Sacred Hearts? What did you like least?

I thought/ hoped I would enjoy this story, but it was painful to finish the book. The story was interesting and probably I would have been better off just with the book version. The voice of the actress was all right but she did not captivate me at all and I took much longer than normal to finish the story.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Maggie Mash?

Yes and she was much better on the other book. so perhaps it is not her but the book itself that made me sleepy.

    "A bit relentless"
Would you ever listen to anything by Sarah Dunant again?

Yes possibly, she writes well but the subject matter was depressing and the storyline felt repetitively grim

    Any additional comments?

I found this book overlong and unrelentingly distressing.

    "Good story, interesting world"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

yes, interesting world, and fascinating historical facts that intrigued Sarah Dunant to write novel. Really like Shakespearean themed novels.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Suora Zuana, finds a life within the walls of the convent that would not have been available to a woman of her times, and has an intelligence and soul that is inspiring.

Have you listened to any of Maggie Mash’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no. Happy to in the future though.

If you could take any character from Sacred Hearts out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Suora Zuana, imagine the remedies she might share with me

    Any additional comments?

    worth the read/listen. thanks

    "Interesting story about nunnery"

If a family had many daughters, especially in Italy in the 1500's. In order to find good husband for these young ladies the family had to provide funds for each daughter. Usually the youngest daughters had to resign themselves to becoming the bride of Christ. Many of these young ladies did not go willingly. This is a story of one such young person, and the laws and politics of what goes on in a nunnery. Of course there was always the trickle down effect of who ever the pope was and bishops, etc. However the strict laws of conduct of the nunnery, and the feeling of being betrayed by family can totally destroy a young mind. Then when there is betrayal within the nunnery on top of that, the screws tighten even deeper. I felt the story was well researched and well written. The narration was ok, I felt some of the voices were a bit over done but at least you could tell which character was speaking. I like historical novels, an this one was pretty good. I won't spoil it with how it ends. I suggest you get the free listen before you buy. There are two versions of this, with two different narrators. Both are unabridged. One is just over 15 hours and this one is just over 17 hours, the only reason for this that I can figure is in the narration and speed of the narrators speech. I listened to both free listens before buying and I chose this one.
