Summary

Cornwall in the 1780s - when powerful forces of revolution and reaction are at large in the world. The first in the riveting Poldark series.

Tired from a grim war in America, Ross Poldark returns to his land and his family. But the joyful homecoming he has anticipated turns sour, for his father is dead, his estate is derelict, and the girl he loves is engaged to his cousin. But his sympathy for the destitute miners and farmers of the district leads him to rescue a half-starved urchin girl from a fairground brawl and take her home-an act which alters the whole course of his life....

Book 1!

Winston Graham's first book in the Poldark series, Ross Poldark, is named after the hero of the tale! The book is set in the 18th Century.

Ross is a British Army officer who returns to Cornwall, from the American War of Independence, to find his father, dead; his estate derelict and the young lady he thought he was pledged to, engaged to his cousin.

After rescuing an urchin girl & takIng her home, he is considered even less worthy of keeping his place in society.

Eventually, as a young woman, she recognises her feelings for Ross.

I feel that the narrator let the book down.

It does not disappoint!

If you could sum up Ross Poldark in three words, what would they be?

Well narrated yarn!

What did you like best about this story?

The real sense of the age. The characters were well described and the writer gives you a real feel of Cornwall with its wonderful colloquial language. You felt like the characters were very familiar and that you really cared about their lives.

What about Oliver J. Hembrough’s performance did you like?

A wonderful round voice, which lent itself to all the characters. Highly recommended narrator.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me feel warm and comfortable a very emotionally involved with the characters.

Any additional comments?

I read this book in the 1970's and this audio has reminded me of just how beautifully written it is. I think Ross and Demelza are real heroes and heroines.

Proper Job.

I'm cursing that I enjoyed this story so, there are many books in this series and it's going to cost me a pretty penny to get through all of it.

A damn good listen

What did you like most about Ross Poldark?

The narrator was very good if a little over zealous with his accent

What was one of the most memorable moments of Ross Poldark?

Ross and Demelza's growing intimacy and the tragedies they kept facing

What does Oliver J. Hembrough bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Atmosphere and a voice to the characters I hadn't imagined myself. He is very consistent and whilst this review is of the first novel in the sequence I have listened to the second and third too ( Demelza's & Jeremy Poldark ) and whilst there must have been a gap between recordings, he seems to slip effortlessly back into character.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The near death of Demelza and the death of the couple's first child

Any additional comments?

I loved all the Poldark novels as a youngster but never liked the first tv adaptation much. The recent tv adaptation is so much better but to tell you the truth the novels themselves and these readings brought back all the affection for these exceptional Cornish tales that I am glad I have revisited them both in the written word and now , thanks to Audible, these audio narrations.

What's not to love about Poldark?

I remember reading this book in the 1970s the first time it was on TV. I was surprised to discover it was written in 1945 yet the themes remain fresh and relevant today. Apart from a very few dodgy mispronounciations, a most enjoyable read.

Returning to my love of Poldark

With the new BBC & PBS co-production of Poldark in 2015, I was interested to revisit the series of books. It's been about 30 years since I read them, and find it most pleasing to find they still hold up. Brings back my love of Verity, Demelza, Cornwall and of course Ross.

Autumn classic

Loved it, would recommend listening to it on quiet autumn evenings, sitting by firelight, sipping hot chocolate.

Absolutely loved this book

After becoming a big fan of Poldark on TV I was unsure about listening to the book. It’s so beautifully written with humour and feeling. The narration was so good. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening and look forward to the next one
