Publisher's Summary

Tired from a grim war in America, Ross Poldark returns to his land and his family. But the joyful homecoming he has anticipated turns sour, for his father is dead, his estate is derelict, and the girl he loves is engaged to his cousin.

But his sympathy for the destitute miners and farmers of the district leads him to rescue a half-starved urchin girl from a fairground brawl and take her home: an act which alters the whole course of his life.

    "A Remarkably fine adaptation"

Even though the book has been severely abridged, removing many characters and much of the historical content, the essence and flavor of Graham's remarkable book are well caught here. Congratulations to whomever wrote the script! The world of the Poldarks seems real, and one comes to care about the people living there. Michael Maloney's virtuosity as narrator is almost beyond belief. Not a line is spoken out of tune, each of the characters takes shape and holds shape consistently, and the timbre of his voice is a constant pleasure. Highly recommended!

    "Wonderful - more please!"
Would you listen to Ross Poldark again? Why?

Yes. This is one of my favourite books, and it is beautifully read by Michael Maloney. My only slight caveat was his accent for Demelza, which to me sounded more Berkshire than Cornish, but all the male characters were highly convincing.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Ross Poldark?

It is all memorable but the conflicts between Ross and his lackadaisical servants Jud and Prude, and his early encounters with Demelza, stand out particularly.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I have read the book several times so listening to it was an added pleasure. There are many moving moments, strong underlying conflicts for all of the main characters, beautiful evocation of eighteenth century Cornwall, strong understanding of the society and different social classes of the time, and a fair sprinkling of humour as well.

    Any additional comments?

I only wish that this audiobook was not an abridged version; I would happily have listened to the whole thing. And why has no-one recorded audio version of the other novels in the Poldark series, several of which are even better than this first one? More please!

The narrators voice was great for every character except Damelza but I thoroughly enjoyed it all the same. Highly recommend

    "Superb narration"
What made the experience of listening to Ross Poldark the most enjoyable?

The narrator, Michael Maloney, really brought this much-loved book alive for the listener. He is SO much better than the recent recording made by Oliver Hembrough (like comparing vintage Rolls with a Robin Reliant). My only sadness was that this version by Michael Maloney was abridged. Please, please let him read the full 12 novels, all unabridged. He is perfect for Winston Grahams novels

What was one of the most memorable moments of Ross Poldark?

Too many to mention, Meeting Demelza, taking off in the boat to watch the mass fish haul & the subsequent conversation, and the fun at Trenwith at Christmas.

What does Michael Maloney bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

A rounded maturity to these wonderful books, almost to imagine that it would be somehow Winston Graham reading his own words. I loved his 'Ross' voice, so masterful!

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I doubt you could word it as the sexiest hero in print

    Any additional comments?

Please, please can Michael Maloney read the whole series of books, unabridged.
