Summary

The only thing in Colin Mulligan's life that makes sense is taking cars apart and putting them back together. In the auto shop where he works with his father and brothers, he tries to get through the day without having a panic attack or flying into a rage. Drinking helps. So does running and lifting weights until he can hardly stand. But none of it can change the fact that he's gay, a secret he has kept from everyone.

Rafael Guerrera has found ways to live with the past he's ashamed of. He's dedicated his life to social justice work and to helping youth who, like him, had very little growing up. He has no time for love. Hell, he barely has time for himself. Somehow, everything about miserable, self-destructive Colin cries out to him. But down that path lie the troubles Rafe has worked so hard to leave behind. And as their relationship intensifies, Rafe and Colin are forced to dredge up secrets that both men would prefer stay buried.

Spencer Goss, you're a star!!

The consummate performance. This just blew me away!! ALL the stars for this narration from Spencer Goss, absolutely magnificent and one of the best, if not THE best narration I've listened to so far...and that's saying something cos I've listened to a fair few amazing ones. EVERYTHING you could wish for in a reading of someone's story, full of emotional highs and lows, different voices for each character, and the feels, sighs...immense. I gushed about him in my review for the audio book Fish Stick Fridays by Rhys Ford, and finished my review saying 'More Spencer Goss please!!'...well, someone at Dreamspinner Press must have heard my plea, and this is the result.

You know the phrase 'from the SUBLIME to the ridiculous' ...well, in this instance, it's most definitely the other way around. Robert Nieman's performance of the first story in the series was in all honesty a huge disappointment, I was distinctly underwhelmed. As this title wasn't my favourite in the series anyway, I had absolutely no intention of buying it UNTIL it popped up in my Audible feed and I noticed who the narrator was...I couldn't download it quickly enough then.

Now onto the story. No, I didn't like Colin anymore than I did reading the story. I still despise him and he was still a Dick with a capital D, so deeply closeted he wasn't anywhere near that darned Narnian wardrobe, so much self-hatred, self-denial and self-loathing that sometimes you just wanted to say 'f**k it, get on with it then', and so much envy and jealousy aimed at his younger brother Daniel for living the life that he, Colin, didn't have the guts to live, that all he seemed to do was spew vile, nasty, hateful things and sometimes even be violent towards Daniel. Of course, that worsened when their racist bigot of a father died, and Daniel appeared at the funeral with Rex in tow and caught Colin being hugged by Rafe...understandably Daniel lost it having discovered that Colin had been living a lie.

Did I feel more empathetic towards Colin after Spencer's reading?? Maybe....a teeny, tiny bit but I have to say that he's still one of my most detested characters [and I know I'm not alone in that opinion].

So, I gave 4 stars for the story in my initial review of the book cos, you know, I may think Colin's a complete douche, but I can still appreciate a good story when I read one. The story stays at 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars, but for Spencer's narration?? There aren't enough stars available....

MORE, MORE, MORE SPENCER GOSS!!!

So Emotional it reduced me to tears

Would you listen to Out of Nowhere again? Why?

YES, over and over. It was a beautiful story, yet heartbreaking. But it was real and it had so many steamy moments you would never have enough!.

Who was your favorite character and why?

That is a very difficult question, I found both male leads where as important as each other and although at times Colin can frustrate you (not in a bad way) as in the writer intended for this, you understand as you read on why he behaves the way he does and you can't help but feel for him in so many ways.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Well I loved seeing Daniel from the first book again, and loved the part when he comes to see Colin, their interaction is adorable and can I say Spencer did such an amazing job, in some parts there were 4/5 different characters in one room and he did all their voices brilliantly.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me cry most of the times. I actually cried more in this book than with the first one, there were so many powerful moments, so many things that weren't spoken and yet you felt each and every emotion.

Any additional comments?

The Author of these series has blown my mind. I actually thought it was going to be impossible to top of her first book, and don't get me wrong it was an incredible story, but this book, was cathartic, was very raw, honest and real and I feel I went on a journey with Colin and Rafe. Also can I say being Mexican and named Gabriela almost made me feel like I was part of the story.
ANOTHER HEARTBREAKINGLY SPECTACULAR BOOK. Can't wait for the next one!

Surprised

I had a love hate thing going with the first book so initially I was put off by this book being about Colin (who you only know as a giant douche) and the change of narrator. I was blissfully proven wrong, Colin is a severely damaged person who needs someone who won't leave when he pushes, Rafe is a his perfect match someone that really wants to care for him all the characters are genuine and complex and spencer goss, I feel managed to capture them. (Kept imagining Jensen ackles and Jason momoa (as prompted) Overall I loved it though the characters from the 1st book actually became slightly irritating though that could be from the perspective change. Highly recommended. Enjoy.

Heartbreakingly sad but yet sooo good

What made the experience of listening to Out of Nowhere the most enjoyable?

Spencer Goss' narration was so good, and I think he managed to convey Colin's anguish, pain and self-hatred perfectly, that perhaps doesn't come across quite so clearly in the written word only.

Rafe's patience and gentleness was instrumental in Colin's "healing", and Spencer's Rafe showed that.

What does Spencer Goss bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The gentleness of Rafe, yet he shows Rafe has a steel core which helped him overcome his own demons and is needed when Colin reached the bottom.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me cry (both when I read it and when I listened to it), yet when it was over I felt happy that Colin and Rafe were in a good place both individually and as a couple.

It's not an easy book to either read or listen to, but it's important as it shows how damaging (internalized) homophobia is or can be. Words can and do break people every day!

Any additional comments?

I really like Spencer Goss' voice, both his cadence, modulation and his ability to also do "normal" female voices {i.e. no falsetto. ;)}, and I look forward to listen to him again.

Heartbreaking and soul mending all at once

After reading In the middle of somewhere book 1 (amazing) I went straight into Book 2 not expecting to fall in love with the characters and narration the way I had with the first. It was completely different but also just as beautiful and sexy. Roan Parish has just become my new favourite author. Thank You for your creation,

Great addition to the series

From the previous book, Colin comes across as unlikable and entirely gross.
Roan Parrish shapes the story around Colin in a way where we can see him grow and see why he is the way he is. The character arc is heartwarming

A wonderful story with a crossover from the previous book.

highly recommend this book!

Good

I actually enjoyed this book more than the first. There is more story to this book rather than sex scenes in every chapter like the book 1. Colin is definitely a redeeming character and reading from his POV is refreshing. I would recommend this book and will read more from this author.

Powerful, heartbreaking story

When it comes to audiobooks I'm a difficult customer but darn it all the soulful voice of Spencer Goss has me homicidal against everyone and everything that hurts Colin. He delivers a narration that makes the book that much more real and that much more heartfelt. Seriously sometimes it was hard to keep on listening 'cos I could feel Colin's pain so acutely.

To most Colin is an immature and stunted emotionally adult. For me, he's a guy that lost his mother in his teenage years with 2 younger brothers that were looking up at him, an older brother that as it proves, later on, wasn't emotionally invested (to protect himself but still) and a father that everyone tiptoed around. So as someone said he told unfortunate lies to deal with a difficult situation and in the process, he built a prison for himself. A prison that was destroying him.

Reading Colin's POV made me want to get some bubble wrap and wrap him in it so nothing can ever hurt him again and give him only good things so that he can be happy.

I'm glad I got to know Rafe more than I did Rex in the previous book because I actually feel that even though the ending of the story was a strong HFN for some for me it's a HEA because Rafe and Colin are great together, they click and take care of each other, they get each other, they need each other and they are there for each other, and they don't take each other or what they have for granted. They fight, they argue, they make up. And that's everything.

Word of warning Rafe and Colin ARE HAWWWWWT between the sheets. That was some of the best chemistry I've read in a while!
