Summary
Ambitious and addictive, Only Time Will Tell is the first novel in Jeffrey Archer’s The Clifton Chronicles, beginning the epic tale of Harry Clifton, a working-class boy from the docks of Bristol. Read by Emilia Fox, known for her role in Silent Witness, and Roger Allam.
It is 1920, and against the backdrop of a world ravaged by conflict, Harry’s story begins with the words ‘I was told that my father was killed in the war’. Harry’s existence is defined by the death of his father and he seems destined to a life on the docks until a remarkable gift wins him a scholarship to an exclusive boys school and entry into a world he could never have envisaged.
Over the course of twenty years, as the Second World War and the fight against Hitler draws nearer, Harry will learn the awful truth about his father’s death and of his own connections to a powerful shipping family, the Barringtons. And in doing so, he will change his destiny forever . . .
Richly imagined and populated with remarkable characters, The Clifton Chronicles will take you on a powerful journey, bringing to life one hundred years of family history in a story neither you, nor Harry, could ever have dreamt of.
Continue the bestselling series with The Sins of the Father and Best Kept Secret.

Best read for ages
Beautifully narrated and I can't wait to read Book 2. A perfect book to read on holiday - especially if on a plane or ferry as it makes time pass very quickly !!

The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby
I found this book to be average. The story is simplistic, the style of writing even more so. The characters and feel of the book seemed rather Dickensian. You cannot read this book and not make comparisons with Nicholas Nickleby, Though for me it was a lot more accessible than Nicholas Nickleby.
The idea of giving the first book away free is great and I cannot complain too much about since it didn't cost me a credit. However it has not enticed me enough to get the second book in the series.
Certainly worth a try if it costs you nothing.

A cracking story to listen too but ........
Thoroughly enjoyable listen (audible download). A great story as would be expected from Jeffrey Archer.
It's the first in a quintet of books and based on the cliffhanger ending you will definitely have to read or listen in order
The story follows the life of Harry Clifton - son of a dock worker who disappears early in Harry's life, and his mother has to work to provide for him. It turns out Harry is quite gifted and we follow him through his transference into the world of the upper middle class in 30's England up until the point of war breaking out in 1939. Throughout the story you understand that Harry's Dad may not be who he believes him to be, and much of the plot revolves around this. The story is told from many of the different characters perspectives which I actually enjoyed.
The reason for the dropped 2 stars boil down to the amount of story line that was glazed over and given no detail. I don't want to say too much and give spoilers but I was left thinking 'when did that happen' or 'why is there no elaboration on this sub plot' quite frequently. I am hoping some of these loose ends will be picked up in the next book. So my review may only be 3 stars but I will listen to the next in the series.
Ps. I found Harry the main character a bit too good to be true. It would have been good to give him a bit of a shaded element to his character to balance him out and make him more believable.

Hooked!
I was unsure of listening at first as I only started listening as it was available for free! All I can say is I am hooked! Looking forward to listening to the rest of the Clifton chronicles and undoubtedly more cliff hangers and twists!

Got this as a free download, enjoyed it so much I've purchased the rest of the series. Not my usual style of book, but so glad I'd run out of credits and just finished a book otherwise I may never have tried it.

Good for a freebie
The narrator was very good. The story a bit slow but will buy the next abridged book.
