Summary

A moving story of love, second chances and the importance of family from the Number One International Bestseller.

When Jack Canfield is told he has a terminal illness and that he has weeks to live, his first concern is for his beloved wife, Lizzie, and children, baby Jack, Cory and rebellious teenager Mikki.

On Christmas Eve, when Lizzie comes home, Jack is devastated to see his neighbour, Bill Miller, kiss Lizzie on their driveway. Jack confronts her, she tries to explain he's got it all wrong, and distraught, she leaves the house into an ice storm - and a fatal collision with a truck. Overwhelmed with grief, and with his illness worsening Jack is taken into a hospice. The children move to the West Coast to live with various members of the family. But then a miracle happens. Jack begins to recover, and day by day he starts to heal. Confounding the doctors, Jack leaves the hospital without any evidence of the illness.

Unexpectedly the family inherits a beautiful old villa with a lighthouse on the beach in South Carolina. It was the house where Lizzie grew up and Jack feels an inexplicable closeness to her while he's there. Although his mother-in-law, Bonnie, has other ideas for their future, Jack knows that this is the chance he has to re-build his relationship with his kids. And as he struggles to reconnect with the children, he also has the chance to find love again, perhaps even with Lizzie's help.

unexpected gem

What made the experience of listening to One Summer the most enjoyable?

I reluctantly purchased this book simply on the basis I was a Baldacci fan, and despite my misgivings about his seemly sentimental redirection. I was wrong this book is absolutely captivating. I was taken on a journey of love, loss, sadness, and joy, but written in such a way that it retained Baldacci's ability to keep us on the edge of our seats. it wasn't a straight line. It was a journey of many twists and turns holding surprises and shocks round every corner. This story although a work of fiction truly holds a powerful message which can be interpreted by the reader to fit their circumstance.

What about Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ’s performance did you like?

They portrayed the characters with sincerity without falling into the trap of overacting a part. Their clear voices made listening a pleasure

Any additional comments?

I would have liked to have known the content of the last letter........

A truly a moving portrait of devastated family.

Would you listen to One Summer again? Why?

A departure from Mr. Baldacci's normal book. A captivating book detailing to lives of a family after the unexpected death of the Mother and the Fathers being snatched from a certain death. The up, downs and challenges they face. One of the best books I have ever listened to. David Baldacci shows he is one of the best novelist for our time.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Father - He strength demonstrated through drive to keep his family together!

Have you listened to any of Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

To listen to them working together is magical. They are truly masters of the spoken word.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The unexpected future!

Dreadful

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This is possibly the worst book I've ever listened to. I gave up listening before the end.

What could David Baldacci have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not written it.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointed.

Any additional comments?

Sentimental claptrap.

Unbearably cheesy

Listening to this book made me wonder what was going on in the author's mind when he decided to switch genre and try his hand at romance. It also made me want to beg him to please go back to those detective novels I had enjoyed so much. After all the cheesy molasses which had threatened to have me suffocated while trying to get to the end of the book, I really couldn't believe my own ears when I was made, for the second time, to listen to all of the the letters (7 of them in a row) Jack had written to his wife and which had already been expertly doled out throughout the narration. Not only am I sorry for wasting my time listening to the end but also for this resulting in never ever wanting to go near a novel written by Baldacci again. Whatever the genre.
