Summary

A boy wins $100,000 in a box of Frosted Flakes - only to discover that claiming the winnings may unravel his family. An acclaimed ambulance driver seeks the courage to follow his heart and throw it all away to be a singer-songwriter. A school principal unveils a bold plan to permanently abolish arithmetic. A new arrival in heaven, overwhelmed by infinite options, procrastinates over his long-ago promise to visit his grandmother. We meet a vengeance-minded hare. We learn why wearing a red T-shirt is the key to finding love; how February got its name; and why the stock market is sometimes just...down.

Finding inspiration in questions from the nature of perfection to the icing on carrot cake, from the deeply familiar to the intoxicatingly imaginative, One More Thing finds its heart in the most human of phenomena: love, fear, family, ambition, and the inner stirring for the one elusive element that might make a person complete. The stories in this collection are like nothing else, but they have one thing in common: they share the playful humour, deep heart, inquisitive mind, and altogether electrifying spirit of a writer with a fierce devotion to the entertainment of the listener.

Read by the author, with special appearances by Lena Dunham, Jenna Fischer, Mindy Kaling, Julianne Moore, Carey Mulligan, Katy Perry, Jason Schwartzman, Emma Thompson, and Rainn Wilson.

Critic reviews

" One More Thing is a funny and inventive debut collection, infused with a deadpan absurdist wit reminiscent of Woody Allen and Ian Frazier. B.J. Novak's stories are sly and playful, but they can pack a real emotional wallop." ( Tom Perotta, author of Nine Inches)
"Everyone knew that B.J. Novak was smart and sexy, but funny, too!? Wow, screw that guy. I haven't laughed at words this hard since I read." (Joshua Ferris, author of The Unnamed and Then We Came)
"Dark and hilarious, like the fudge Grandma used to make during her 'special' period. Deliciously funny!" (Jack Handey, author of Deep Thoughts and The Stench Of Honolulu)
"A funny writer with a great ear, but also a genuine storyteller with an observant eye and finely tuned emotional radar." (Michiko Kakutani, New York Times)

Loved it

I really loved this audiobook. Be warned many of the short stories feature R rated content. All are funny and though provoking.

A good read

A good read, not quite as amazingly laugh-out-loud funny as described but narrated with feeling and passion.
Well worth a try.
Just one gripe: the word is normality, not normalcy.
Normalcy is a made up word that has slipped into existence aided by people too lazy to open a dictionary.

Inventive creative stories by a good author

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

My expectation was for a series of roughly similar length stories. Novak offers quirky inventive and original ideas wrapped in various lengths.from a minute to twenty minutes. The writing is very much of a younger generation, It contains lots of conversation and narration but failed to capture my imagination. He can be very original in his ides.

His narration lacks the breadth of an actors voice and works within a narrow sound register. It can become monotonous.

Has One More Thing put you off other books in this genre?

Haven't read others and not particularly motivated to after listening to this book.

Would you be willing to try another one of the narrators’s performances?

No

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Very original ideas wrapped in pacy modern but not very literate language. Struck me as exercises for a creative writing class and they would have been given high marks. His vocabulary is often original but somehow the overall impression is not lasting nor memorable.

Any additional comments?

Really funny and interesting

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but it ended up being really engaging and funny. The performances draw you in and the stories are light hearted and funny while also keeping your attention.

Happier Henry Rollins!

I really enjoyed the different stories and routes taken throughout the book, and the range of narrators also made it a book that I know I'll want to revisit in years to come - lovely stuff

Good

Funny and clever little stories, nicely performed by a starry cast. Got me back into audiobooks after a period of not really clicking with any.

A great collection of Pop absurdity

A very funny collection. BJ takes simple premises the the nth degree, mining plenty of humour in the process. plenty of shorts, sometimes only 2 or 3 sentences long, but I did prefer the longer efforts. Kellogg's, The World's biggest rip off, Sophia and The Best Thing in the World Awards were particular favourites whilst The Rematch, The Guy Who invented the Calender and Monster: The Roller Coaster are worth reading for their brilliant concepts alone.
