Summary

He is Dexter Mayhew, tall, dark, and (she can't deny it) handsome. She is Emma Morley, bottled red hair, wilfully badly dressed, all principles and no action. Could this be the dawn of the rest of their lives? Or are Dex and Em living proof that - despite an unlikely beginning - men and women really can be just good friends?

So dull

Very laboured story of two people who elicit little or no empathy from the reader. So tired of hearing about the drunken stupors (and subsequent bodily malfunctions) of the pathetic male lead. Was waiting for any character to step up and become admirable. None did. It’s really the story of wasted lives.

Lovely story

An interesting and well crafted story. Very good narration. Last 4 flash back chapters not executed well and felt like an after thought. AirPrints g welsh accent intruded at one stage.

I enjoyed the story and am glad I got it.

A great listen

One of my favourite books turned into a favourite listen. Fantastic narration and storytelling. If anything I love it even more now.

Nice story, great narration

Simple and positive story for an easy read about two lovers’ entangled lives.. if you take it for what it is, it is a very nice story.

Slow

The story was really hard to get into and found it wasn’t enjoyable until nearly the end

In the end a touching story

For a long time I was getting very angry with the characters for their cynicism, superiority and complete lack of recognition of when they are in a good relationship and when they are in a bad one.

For so much of the book the characters seem incapable of ever enjoying themselves. Why is the food they eat always rubbish? On holiday on a Greek island or at an expensive, trendy restaurant or a moderately priced Mexican in London. I would expect to find decent food in all those places.

As time goes on I felt they did develop a bit more affection and compassion and it ended as a touching portrait of 2 lives intwined. In the end you are also given more of an insight into all the days you didn’t see.

I am glad I stuck with it though the cynicism.

Superb

Brilliant narration, rollercoaster of a story, a read in one sitting story! Couldn’t put it down. Metaphorically speaking, obviously. It’s an audiobook.

I feel like it would be irresponsible not to say..

I heard this book mentioned on Radio 4 about 10 years ago. Bought a copy from a charity shop 5 years ago and then bought the audiobook version on the 2:1 sale or something so I could not read it all over again. But then I thought "this to read list is getting out of hand". And I picked this at random out of the "not started" pile. And now I'm traumatized. I should have known from the way that Radio 4 woman mentioned it. There was something in that tone I remember to this day. Sort of "it's a great book, well written and a novel concept but...... be warned.". That's the review. That's what you need to know before you hit play.
