Summary

'I can imagine you at forty,' she said, a hint of malice in her voice. 'I can picture it right now.' He smiled without opening his eyes. 'Go on then.'

The 15th of July 1988. Emma and Dexter meet for the first time on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow they must go their separate ways. So where will they be on this one day next year? And the year after that? And every year that follows?

Twenty years, two people, one day.

Critic reviews

"A wonderful, wonderful book: wise, funny, perceptive, compassionate and often unbearably sad. The best British social novel since Jonathan Coe's What a Carve Up!" ( The Times)

Real and gripping

Gripping and heartbreaking, hilarious and tragic, this book shows the less sickly sweet side to love, following the two protagonists through their lives. By the time you have finished it, you will know and love both characters more deeply than your own relations and it will continue to haunt you long after it ends. Highly recommend.

Entertaining - not deep per se, but unexpected.

What made the experience of listening to One Day the most enjoyable?

It engaged - there was no difficulty encountered in the concepts presented - it was an easy read. Characters were sufficiently entertaining and the storyline was not far-fetched or contrived - it was real life.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Don't become complacent - love fully.
