George Elkin has loyally trained as a solicitor in order to follow in his father's footsteps and run the family firm. But when his father dies, George resolves to follow his heart instead, looking after the West Country farm he grew up on. With the help of neighbours, his childhood friends Prodge and Nell, George is sure he can adapt to a rural lifestyle. Nell holds feelings for George she has kept hidden since their childhood and has long had the hope that their friendship would develop into something stronger. But then Lily, a woman George knew in his Oxford days, comes to stay and changes all of their lives and it seems that Nell's hopes will forever remain unfulfilled.
Meanwhile, the rural community is facing a threat to its very existence: BSE, foot and mouth, government proposals on hunting - each crisis straining farmers and their livelihoods to breaking-point. And George and Prodge are faced with the awful knowledge that their future is out of their hands....

"An engaging tale of love and friendship...well paced and lively. Her descriptions of the natural world are enchanting.... Compelling." (The Times)
"[A] captivating romance.... Angela Huth's empathy with the problems facing farmers is skilfully woven into a dramatic tale where suspense builds right up to the last page." (Daily Mail)
I normally enjoy Angela Huth novels, but this one is very slow and ponderous. I could probably have done with an abridged version. While the story itself gently meanders on, The whole experience is not helped by the fact that this is yet another example of poor narration. As this is meant to be set to somewhere in the west country I'm not entirely sure why the main characters seem to have Norfolk accents. It is all very laboured and frankly I am getting increasingly bored with it. I am in the middle of ch 13 and I am writing this review now because I have just come across the narrator clearing his throat stopping and suggesting he goes back and reads a piece again before continuing! It seems the quality of editing is as poor as the narration!! I really do expect better than this from a professional set up such as Audible.
