In Book 8 of Laurann Dohner's steamy, popular New Species series, Dr. Allison Baker passionately tends to 880, a wounded New Species: part animal, part man, and in a coma. Knowing that her tempting female scent will lure him into consciousness, she begins sleeping beside him - and after 880 wakes, choosing the powerful and dark name Obsidian, he decides to claim Alli as his. A sensual, versatile performance from Vanessa Chambers helps bring Dohner's characters to life in this sexy example of erotic sci-fi.
Book 8 in the New Species series.
Dr. Allison Baker is obsessed with saving the comatose New Species male. She has tried everything and there's only one option left. Alli will break every rule and put her life in danger by tempting 880 to wake, using only her feminine scent and touch. She just has to kidnap him and crawl into bed with him to make it work.
880 wakes in a different world with a small female who's been sleeping beside him, caressing him, and wrapping her sweet body around his, teasing his senses. He lies silent and still, listening and evaluating each arousing touch, fighting his body's reaction. Hatred flares when he discovers she's human, but Mercile stole everything from him so he decides it's fair to take her in return.
But things quickly change and he wants her at his side and in his bed. 880 has chosen a new name - Obsidian - the personification of dark and dangerous. He'll fight them all to keep Alli. No one will stand in his way.

I love this Author ( Laurann Dohner The narrator Vanessa Chambers is very good and brought the characters alive. I love this set and I agree their best read in order. The only book I did not read was wrath but to be fair it was the synopsis that put me off so I did not download this book, I loved Justice ,Tiger and Shadow the most. I like that the women are
as equally feisty & know what they want in and out of the bed great escapism.
This was good, but not the best. There was barely any action, no mercile, or protesters were in it, and it was slow. I would have liked to see alli working at the prison and interacting with the
mercile prisoners. Would have been better had something happened there to liven up the story.
"So hard... on the fence!"
I really did like this book... Really!
My one and only issue is with Ali (Dr. Alison Baker). She was extremely wishy washy the entire book. It literally drove me crazy. Apparently she had a connection with Obsidian because she literally stole him from the NSO... but as soon as he wakes up and she gets to see him again, she gets all "I love you, but I can't be with you".
But what really takes to cake... is how she is supposed to be a doctor, and she has the hugest language barrier with him... She gets pissed b/c he is too blunt... Well he has been locked up in a cage for, IDK... his entire life... so yeah... social etiquette will go right out the window for Obsidian... how does she not get that... Seriously...
The story is pretty much the same format, NS finding their mate with a human... but Ali is just... eh! She reminds me of Trisha... just irritating...
Story is still worth a listen; especially you have invested in the other 7 books... Just be warned... Ali is going to be irritating.
Good Credit, Buy or Sale... Either one...you will be happy... but seriously... think about Ali before you use that credit. I prefer to use my credits on something more expensive and that will leave me feeling satisfied...
Narration was awesome... as usually for this series and narrator...
"Overall ~ A Good Story!!"
Obsidian's story was good but my least favorite so far.
I do love how some of the charters are developed over the series but each story is really about a different New Species and Obsidian has been recently freed so he had some issues.
What I did not like about this story was the fact they sent Ali away to bring Obsidian in line and learn how to fit in with society.
However, I will definitely be continuing this series.
"OBSIDIAN-DARKNESS THAT HOLDS BEAUTY"
Of all the New Species books, this would have to be my least favorite, so far. That is not to say that I didn’t enjoy listening to the book because I did. I just thought the heroine was annoying. Why is it that people that have a lot of book sense don’t really have any common sense. Let me explain.
Dr. Allison Baker (Allie) risks everything (her life, her career, her job) to save a new species that is currently in a coma. She kidnaps Obsidian aka 880 and takes him to a rental house to try to coerce him to awaken using her scent. Obsidian has been in a coma since injuring himself trying to save his mate, when she was killed in front of him by some technicians. He has never known freedom and doesn’t understand that he and his people are free, do you see Allie’s first mistake. Allie then agrees to stay in his room with him, even though he has been somewhat hostile towards her to help him "adjust to freedom", do you see her second mistake. In the end they both get their HEA, but some of Allie decisions just left me confused about this character.
On the other hand, I love Obsidian. He is the perfect prototype of a new species man. He is gorgeous, fierce, and protective and loves hard. He knows he shouldn’t want Allie because she is human but doggoneit, he is determined to have her even if it means learning to accept that not all humans are evil.
This book also lacked some of the action that was previous of the other books. But the storyline is still interesting and it’s also interesting when you learn about Obsidian full background. I think his background was bittersweet, even if he did have a mate. As always, the romance scenes are steamy, hot and drool worthy. It helps keep my work time interesting.
Overall, I think you should read the book, if not for anything just to learn about Obsidian and his life and to catch up on the rest of the New Species characters.
"Good not great"
This wasnt one of my favorites....It was good but was missing the action of the other books in the series.....its still more than worth a listen
"Different take on the New-Species Stories"
The author of this series has quite an imagination that keeps the readers/listeners continuing to come back. This story has a different take than the others. Dr. Allison Baker is obsessed with the new species that is in a coma. His name is 880. Ms. Dohner does it again with such an exciting story that you can't put it down until the last sentence of the book. Or in my case, stop listening to it even to go to bed. The narrator does a great job with this book as usual. This story has all the elements that make it a well rounded book.
"Okay that was pretty good!"
Finally, a book that was totally original, which is saying something since it is book 8 in a series.
Dr. Ally loves New Species and would do anything to protect them, but when one of her patients isn't recovering she takes matter into her own hands to heal him.
I was a bit bummed about the separation, but overall I think it was handled well and the characters got me emotionally invested in this world yet again!
"Great action! Sad story but, same story Premise."
Emotional and appropriate inter action STARVED species INMATE in a coma. A female (anglo/ long hair) Doctor figured that he could "scent" another female to inspire him to wake. This story will keep you listening but SEX does NOT fix everything. Even GREAT sex. This story was uncomfortable for ME at times but, I will still listened. I will continue to read/buy the rest of the series stories about New Species following in love/lust with human female (pale/ anglo) with long hair & the great sex the new species males provide along with environmental conflicts that they have to survive. The reader does a great job, again.
"Fabulous as usual!"
Entertaining, fun and attention getting. Laurianne Dohner is a wonderful story teller, a real gift of mixing suspense with sex.
"Newly Freed & Unhinged"
I'm a total sucker for this series, but, this one was not on the level of some of the others. That said, this one was still good for me, because I'm like a SuperFan for Species! All of the stories have more or less the same concept, and Dohner has come up with some interesting nuances for each story making each one unique. There are two main characteristics of these stories that really tickle my fancy---the sex scenes are super steamy and seem just a bit taboo because of that animalistic vibe the new species have going for them, not sure what that says about me, but, I digress---I also, really get a kick out of communication exchanges the humans and new species have between themselves as they learn about each other. It's probably Dohner's way of poking a little fun at some of society's silly obsessions and/or customs, but, I love the way she writes it---it's really one of the funniest characteristics of this series. Obsidian's story highlights the struggle of a newly freed species and how things go a little crazy as he's falling in love. I found myself laughing at various moments throughout this story and as usual, totally falling in love with the hot alpha male and his perfectly matched mate. I'm such a fan of these books and can't wait for more!
"masculine voice needed"
male voices/voice should be utilized also. new species are strong, sexy, masculine males. masculinity should be incorperated in the audio performances otherwise it looses alot of the appearl you get by reading it.
