Summary
The extraordinary first novel by the master of storytelling.
THE EXTRAORDINARY FIRST NOVEL BY THE MASTER OF STORYTELLING
ACCLAIMED BBC RADIO 4 DRAMATISATION WITH ALL-STAR CAST INCLUDING JAMES MCAVOY, NATALIE DORMER, DAVID HAREWOOD, SOPHIE OKONEDO AND BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH
Under the streets of London lies a world most people could never dream of.
When Richard Mayhew stops to help a girl he finds bleeding in the street, his unremarkable life changes in an instant.
This act of kindness leads him to a place filled with murderers and angels, pale girls in black velvet, a Beast in a labyrinth and an Earl who holds Court in a tube train. It is strangely familiar yet utterly bizarre.
Here is London Below, the city of people who have fallen between the cracks. And for Richard Mayhew, it's just the beginning.
NEIL GAIMAN.
WITH STORIES COME POSSIBILITIES.
Critic reviews
"Prose that dances and dazzles.... Gaiman describes the indescribable." (Susanna Clarke)
"It's virtually impossible to read more than ten words by Neil Gaiman and not wish he would tell you the rest of the story." (Observer)
"Much too clever to be caught in the net of a single interpretation." (Philip Pullman)

Classic!!
I read this for the first time years ago and hesitated to get it on Audible because the characters already had their own voices in my mind. I made this mistake when watching the TV adaptation of the book which was a mess. But, given that the narrator was Neil Gaiman himself, I felt I really did have to buy it in order to hear what he actually imagined when he wrote the book. And it was wonderful!! I thought it impossible for the book to be any better than the classic it is, but Neil's voice makes it so, it is like having a window into his mind through his voice. If you only ever "read" this book once, do yourself a favour and get the audible version and hear it in Neil's voice. I've listened to it several times since getting it and it will be always one of my favourites. Mind the gap now! ;-)

Like a crazy dream that makes perfect sense...
I think I may have discovered this Pratchett/ Gaiman genre a bit later in my reading life, but, like American Gods, Neverwhere is brilliant.
Going through a bit of a dystopia phase, but Neverwhere is a fun, brilliantly written departure and just ever so slightly ludicrously narrated audiobook. Truly one of those I was genuinely sad to finish. Very funny, fantastical departure from the daily trudge. In fact, it's just a rat infested satire of the daily trudge. With an Archangel thrown in, of course.

Not to be confused with underware
A strange tale of a man who thinks he's solid and sensible thrust into a world where we the reader/listener are given the same amount of confusion and explanation that the main character is. Somewhat frustrating and clumsy but a fairly accurate rendition of any reasonable person stripped of the sensible world around them.
Masterfully narrated and we'll presented.

fantastic story
I thought this story was brilliant, I just wish I'd listened to the whole story in fewer sittings with less space between them. I felt like I'd shot myself in the foot a bit as the long gaps made me forget certain bits of information! My own fault really, but it was a great story!

Re-read (listen?) of an old favourite
Enjoyed it even more, if that's even possible, when read by the author. The story leaves you wanting more, and a little sad to leave the wonderful world you have somehow found yourself in. If you are the sort of person to read a review and trust a stranger, you should definitely read this book.

Such a soothing treat during lockdown
I know the book well and have listened to radio adaptations, but there’s something special about hearing the author read their own words, with their emphasis on the phrasing. And Neil Gaiman has a great reading voice.

Excellent book and superbly narrated.
One of my benchmarks regarding audiobooks is how I actually feel at the end. This book left me sad, missing all the characters. Neil Gaiman’s narration was superb. Just how he managed to add such colour to what were obviously dark characters was a masterclass. Great storytelling and highly recommended.
