Summary

Forced to flee Revolutionary France after the brutal guillotining of her beloved father, Isabella de Savigny arrives at Nethergate, the Suffolk house of her cousin, hoping for sympathy and succour.

Instead, as a poor relation, she is forced to live the life of a servant and suffer the casual cruelty of lady’s maid Martha Pratt. When she is seduced and abandoned by the son of the house, Isabella is forced to marry Martha’s brother, and her struggle to survive truly begins. However, her misery is lessened when her daughter is born, and for her sake she decides to fight back against a hostile world.

Excellent narrators for an enthralling historical novel.

The narrators do a superb job of bringing the various characters alive. The story, of the subsequent life of a young French aristocrat who fled from the French Revolution and was grudgingly taken into the household of a rich relative, a member of the Suffolk Squirearchy, is both fascinating and revealing of the problems encountered by such émigrés trying to forge a new life for themselves. The characters are well-developed and believable. An excellent listen.

Brilliant Audio Book!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I really enjoyed this story which is told in turn by different characters which I loved. I have read the paperback years ago but this reading with the excellent narration by a male and a female really brought it to life. I can't recommed highly enough if you like historical novels.

What did you like best about this story?

The narration.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Madame D'Auby lost her mind. "Cracked" as the book says.

Any additional comments?

Loved it!
