Summary

The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of James Oswald’s gripping new Inspector McLean crime thriller Natural Causes, read by the actor Ian Hanmore.

A young girl’s mutilated body is discovered in a sealed room. Her remains are carefully arranged, in what seems to have been a cruel and macabre ritual, which appears to have taken place over 60 years ago. For newly appointed Edinburgh Detective Inspector Tony McLean this baffling cold case ought to be a low priority - but he is haunted by the young victim and her grisly death.

Meanwhile, the city is horrified by a series of bloody killings. Deaths for which there appears to be neither rhyme nor reason, and which leave Edinburgh’s police at a loss. McLean is convinced that these deaths are somehow connected to the terrible ceremonial killing of the girl, all those years ago. It is an irrational, almost supernatural theory. And one which will lead McLean closer to the heart of a terrifying and ancient evil…

Brilliant

I loved this first book and cannot wait for the follow ups!
It grabs your attention from the start and keeps it. I am an ardant reader of detective/murder novels such as Peter May, Stuart Mcbride and Peter James this falls into that genre with very gruesome murders but with a paranormal slant which was enjoyable and believable.
The main characters are also likeable getting just enough of their background stories to leave you wanting more.
This farmer writes a smashing book - hurry up with the next one!

Spoilt by supernatural nonsense

I'd forgotten that James Oswald boks have a supernatural twist. I was quite enjoying the story, though I found it a little difficult to follow towards the end, and lost interest entirely when it went into the other realm.
Very well read by Ian Hanmore.

Multiple deaths

All a bit overwhelming at the end. Excellent story but a bit rushed finally. The diabolical twists were just credible touching as they did on the internal moral debate that rages in us all at times, but hopefully not of this calibre.

Excellent story well read

A very good story with solid characters and well read. Looking forward to the second book in the series. I'm sure it will be just as good given the previous reviews.

Good book, good narration

I enjoyed the story, and the narration was excellent. I worked out 'Who done it' half way through, but that didn't really spoil anything for me. I will download more by this author and Ian Hanmore the narrator.

Interesting...

This is the first James Oswald novel for me and I largely enjoyed it, although it was pretty gory in places, he does seem rather obsessed with autopsy detail. Insp McLean is somewhat bland and doesn't have the charisma of other detectives (Rebus), but the story bowled along well and I enjoyed the overall feel. The storyline was a little predictable and I worked out most of the plot twists as they were well signed posted... I have just ordered book two and hope the series develops.

Not just another crime thriller

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would, but it takes a bit of concentrating on.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the characters

What about Ian Hanmore’s performance did you like?

Well, good voices but his voice could put you to sleep

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, not really a moving book, that's not its aim.

Any additional comments?

This book improved. At the start I was bored, thought it was going to be just another crime thriller but it improved, so ive now bought the next one.
