Spanning almost 30 years, My Other Life traces the journey of a fictional Paul Theroux from young bachelorhood in Africa, to his travels between continents, being in and out of marriage, and through affairs and various means of employment. From his early education at the knee of a highly eccentric uncle, until his years as a fledgling novelist in London under the wing of the rapacious Lady Max, this writer of different guises eventually returns alone to his hometown, in retreat, where he finds the raw material to begin again.
This wry, worldly, erotic, and deeply moving account of one man's first half century is among the strongest works written by Theroux.

"Loaded with wit and cleverness ... absorbing, sexy and funny." (The New York Times)
I read this book in when it was first released in book form. It was wonderful to revisit this novel in oral form.I had to remind myself that this novel is fiction, not Autobiographic about Theroux. He is a fiction writer who has created this character who somewhat resembles the author, but it is not him. Bits and pieces of him, but not the true person. No one usually opens themselves to reveal l the truth about themselves. He has created a public fictional image. He uses his skill to have this "fictional" person. Good entertainment.
The beginning when Theroux indicates the only truthful aspect of the novel is the mask of the main character, Paul Theroux.
Enjoyed the story about his life in Singapore.
No. It is too long.
