Summary

Set on the Western Front, in London and in Paris, My Dear I Wanted to Tell You is a moving and brilliant novel of love, class, and sex in wartime, and how war affects those left behind as well as those who fight.

While Riley Purefoy and Peter Locke fight for their country, their survival and their sanity in the trenches of Flanders, Nadine Waveney, Julia Locke, and Rose Locke do what they can at home. Beautiful, obsessive Julia and gentle, eccentric Peter are married: each day Julia goes through rituals to prepare for her beloved husband’s return. Nadine and Riley, only 18 when the war starts, and with problems of their own already, want above all to make promises - but how can they when the future is not in their hands? And Rose? Well, what did happen to the traditionally brought-up women who lost all hope of marriage, because all the young men were dead?

Beautifully Crafted Heartfelt Novel

I usually listen to 2 audiobooks (1 for the waking day and household tasks, 1 for falling asleep to) but I couldn't put this one down/turn this one off.

Flawless narration by Dan Stevens, as always. It's almost a shame he's so good-looking and acts so well, because I think his greatest talents lie in voice acting.

Don't listen to this on your period, as I did. Far too much crying, and too many moments of genuine laughter. It wreaked havoc with my cramps. Brilliant story, well told, with characters you really care about.

Final thought: I'll always have affection for any novel in which the most welcome line is, "You lying, faithless bastard."

Great story

I really enjoyed this story based on the First World War, a love story about how people’s lives affected by war and it’s aftermath

What a beautiful book

This is probably my favourite book at the moment, my sister recommended it and I am so glad that she did, it is the sort of book that haunts you, brings tears to your eyes and lives on in your mind. The usual thing with books you are really enjoying the bittersweet tension between not being able to stop listening and not wanting to finish. The narration is excellent, the story is gentle, heart-rending and totally believable.

a beautiful story

very well written, dan stevens' voice and reading made it alive. very sad, still full of hope and most of all love. thoughts of each character very deep, smart, clever, touching...

it should put our lives and time into perspective and appreciate what we have.

Oh My God I Adored This Book!

I cannot bear to have to wait for Louisa Young to write the sequel.... This book is so many things.. a love story, a tragedy, a historical novel... to name but a few. It starts slowly, but once Riley signs up there really is no stopping it. Characters that are all so very different but so very damaged in one way or another at the end, but left with the hope that things may get better, and they all do have a future now that the conflict is over. I absolutely loved this book, and was left on many occasions in tears listening to it. Dan Stevens is fantastic, if I could give him 11 out of 10 I would. Don't hesitate to buy this audiobook, you will not regret it.

A delight

Where does My Dear I Wanted to Tell You rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of the best audiobooks I've listened to. The narrator is constantly appropriate, does the voices, and lulls you into the story entirely, which in itself is a masterpiece of interwoven characters.

What was one of the most memorable moments of My Dear I Wanted to Tell You?

I was crying. In the gym. Probably the most memorable audiobook experience I've had.

Deeply moving

heart wrenching heart warming - evanescent -writing conveys stark horror and nuanced complex emotional states = an artist's eye for detail.
