    "Stirring from start to finish"

Thanks to the TV series the early Hornblower novels are quite well known. This the first in the series is a stirring read, full of action and colour. The performance is very good. On to the next book

My favourite in the Hornblower series of books. Well read by Christian Rodska, who clearly has a genuine interest in naval fiction and naval history. Highly recommended.

What a pleasure to listen to the story that I have read as a child in the sixties.

Great book packed with naval history. As educational as it is entertaining. A cracking read from the age of fighting sail.

A very fast paced book, well read. I will be listening to the whole series. Surprised how much story can be fitted into such a short time.

The narrator handles the different characters very well - both male and female - and his pacing gives energy to these classic maritime tales.

"A lesser known classic- still GREAT!"

This is a story of character growth- mistakes, temptation, pride all subjugated in favor of the greater good, of self mastery. Human triumph! And all at sea during war-time 150 years ago. 😊

    "Ripping Good Yarn"

Having greatly enjoyed the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey & Maturin series, Forester's Hornblower series had a high bar to clear. This first book promises an absorbing and enjoyable experience equivalent to the O'Brian oeuvre. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

    "Loved it"

Probably biased because I've already read this, and Hornblower is one of my favourite series. If you aren't familiar with the story it's about a young, awkward, self-doubting man working his way through the British Royal Navy during the napoleonic wars. I will warn you there are a lot of nautical terms, but the narrator does a good enough job that if you don't understand the terms you still feel gripped by the story.

Very well read and surprisingly enjoyable story of the high seas in the napoleonic wars. Less dour than Patrick O'Brian. Thoroughly enjoyable adventure.

    "A joy to listen to"

I chose this book because I was looking for a good book to fall asleep to and it seemed to me that a story which I know so very well, read to me in a nice English accent would do the trick. Alas not, and so I listened though it in four or five sittings.
Left work early to enjoy the last chapter with a good cup of coffee in the autumn sun.
