Summary

Timothy Gandy has kept his lifetime's ambition secret for 40 years. Now, suddenly (if tragically) released from the henpecked tedium of his ordinary existence, he is unexpectedly free to realize his dreams. He will embark on a grand tour of Europe, following in the footsteps of the aristocrats of the 18th century. He anticipates high art, culture and pleasant weather. He never expects to encounter new friendships - and possibly even love - along the way.

It seems that Mr Gandy has embarked on the journey of a lifetime....

An absolutely sweet and realistic story

So down to earth but deep and meaningful are all the protagonists of this story. Mr Gandy, Tom or Timothy felt at times such an ‘accidental’ man, in his naivety and freshness. Deeply artistic himself and for that reason so simply appreciative of the arts, he shows a different slant to the major works of art he visited.
Most enjoyable book!

Captivating

As usual Alan Titchmarsh does not let the listener down with his sensitivity and great insight into human nature and complicated relationships. Loved it. Thank you Alan.

The best yet

I love Alan's books, but this one was amazing - the best one in my opinion! A love story & adventure rolled into a fantastic travel guide, this story totally gripped me & I wanted to have the heart to go on these adventures. A true escapism that I will treasure.

Gentle

This is a coming-of-age in your 50s story. Easy listening and enough in the plot to stay to the end.

The charm of the lead character

A gentle tale told by a gentle man. Could this be someone you know? Each character was like a member of my family.
