Summary

The world of Colonial America comes vibrantly to life in this masterful new historical thriller by Robert McCammon. The latest entry in the popular Matthew Corbett series, which began with Speaks the Nightbird and continued in The Queen of Bedlam, Mister Slaughter opens in the emerging metropolis of New York City in 1702, and proceeds to take both Matthew and the reader on an unforgettable journey of horror, violence, and personal discovery.

The journey begins when Matthew, now an apprentice problem solver for the London-based Herrald Agency, accepts an unusual and hazardous commission. Together with his colleague, Hudson Greathouse, he agrees to escort the notorious mass murderer Tyranthus Slaughter from an asylum outside Philadelphia to the docks of New York. Along the way, Slaughter makes his captors a surprising - and extremely tempting - offer. Their response to this offer will alter the course of the novel, setting in motion a series of astonishing, ultimately catastrophic events.

Mister Slaughter is at once a classic portrait of an archetypal serial killer and an exquisitely detailed account of a fledgling nation still in the process of inventing itself. Suspenseful, illuminating, never less than compulsively readable, it is, by any measure, an extraordinary achievement, the largest accomplishment to date from one of our most gifted - and necessary - writers.

A Bit too Gory for me

Well written and very descriptive, and superbly read by the narrator...his characterisations are superb..5 stars for the narrator and 3 for the novel...just too gory and violent for me this one....Not as interesting as the first novel in the series for example...more linear..which is a shame..

Unnecessary gore

I really enjoyed the first books in this series but this and the next, which I have returned, are padded out, unnecessarily in my opinion, with lengthy passages of gory violence that does not add a jot to the storyline. such a shame

gripping!

Where does Mister Slaughter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

From all the books ive listened to over last few years this book this series gripped me from the beginning and has become one of my firm favourites.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Mister Slaughter?

There were several memorable parts in the book and the way the twists and turns happen keep you desperate to find out what is happening next. The several plots are brilliantly interwoven and take you way off the predictable outcomes!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Def. I loved where it went plus the way it was read brought it to life so well

Any additional comments?

Glad I took a achance on first book as that led me to the series. I was disappointed when I came to the end of the books. Keen to see how Matthew gets on

loved previous work, could not finish this one

I have loved previous books in this seriers. After listening to this one I had to give up less than halfway through. The plot is ridiculous and the actions of the characters completely forced and unrealistic. I kept listening through the frustrating B-rated horror type "don't go there, don't go there, why did you go there!?" section which ended completely as expected, but then gratuitous unecessary violence straight after just topped it off and I gave up. Disappointing and stupid.

I hope part 4 is better

Part one was excellent; part two was very good; part three is predictable, without twists, lacks the humour of the others and covers 6 hours of storyline over 16 hours.

Too predictable. It is horrible knowing what is going to happen, but having to read padded out storyline for hours until the book catches up to where you are!!

I hope part four gets back on track.

Sweeney Todd goes to New York!

This book in the series was back to the quality of the first one and there was a lot more action and a little more pace. The characters again were excellent and plenty of humour in places.

If anything, I became a little impatient in parts for the plot to deliver the twists I'd seen coming a mile away, but I really didn't mind so much as it was so enjoyable.
