Summary
Master and Commander is the first of Patrick O’Brian’s now famous Aubrey-Maturin novels, regarded by many as the greatest series of historical novels ever written. It establishes the friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey RN and Stephen Maturin, who becomes his secretive ship’s surgeon and an intelligence agent. It displays the qualities which have put O’Brian far ahead of any of his competitors: his depiction of the detail of life aboard an early 19th century man-of-war, of weapons, food, conversation and ambience, of the landscape and of the sea. O’Brian’s portrayal of each of these is faultless and the sense of period throughout is acute. His power of characterisation is above all masterly. Ric Jerrom reads this classic sea story from Patrick O’Brien.

Great Story and much detail.
I love all the interesting details about sailing the old Royal Navy ships. those men were so tough. This is a great listen but I did feel the story had a bit of an anticlimactic ending. it Al.ost came as a surprise.

Masterful historical novel. Wonderful narration
This was my first Patrick O Brian novel and listening to it as an audiobook was a memorable and thrilling experience. The narrator Rik Geram did an unbelievable job not only with the diverse range of voices but also with a number of excerpts of songs and sea shanties. The novel itself is meticulous and illuminating in its historical detail and the interplay between Captain Aubrey and the two Irish character’s Dr Stephen Maturin and Lieutenant James Dillon, both veterans of the Irish 1798 Rebellion made for a fascinating and multilayered subplot amidst the main story of the adventures of the sloop, the Sophie and her cruises between Minorca and Gibraltar during the Napoleonic Wars. I can not recommend this book enough. I am moving straight onto the second book in the series.

True to the book. So enjoyable.
I have previously read all the books in the Aubrey Maturin series therefore I was predisposed to enjoying this novel but what a joy it is to re-enter their world in this medium. I had hesitated, apprehensive it would demean the memory i had of these characters but to my delight it has elevated it. An immersive experience .

Not, as it turns out, my cup of tea. Wish it was.
Much as I like the genre, I found it hard to sympathise with the characters. The world is painted in superb detail and realism, which is much to approve of and explains why these stories are held in such high regard generally. But it just feels irritating to me in too many little ways, I just can't get into the book.
