Summary
The thrilling debut from comedy writer and stand up star Will Smith - a novel about loneliness, about not belonging, and about the corroding effects of keeping secrets.
It's Jersey in 1987, and the storm clouds are gathering over Colin Bygate. Sitting on a headland, stewing over the discovery that his wife used to date Rob de la Haye, a brash hotelier who is everything Colin is not, he spots a pupil near the edge of the cliff.
Worried that the boy may have intended to jump, Colin drives him home, hoping his gloomy imagination was playing tricks. But when the boy fails to turn up to school the next day, Colin feels duty bound to track him down, pitting him against the island establishment, who would rather there was a little less noise around this particular absence.
A web of characters is spun around this mystery, all with their own secrets. For living in Jersey, where everyone knows everyone else's business, you must become your own island.

"Faultless. Brilliant. Magnificent." (Observer)
"Smith's material is gold...tear-jerkingly funny." (Metro)
"One of the most reliably excellent comedians." (Independent on Sunday)

Faint Praise
If you know Jersey the setting is good and the locations familiar. But otherwise this is duff. It's like he got bored with his own story and just finished it off with every loose end dangling. Only good literature can get away with that. This isn't and doesn't.
