Three women, united by love and kinship, struggle to conform to the social norms of the times in which they live.
In 1931 Katherine Henderson leaves behind her small town in Kansas and the marriage proposal of a local boy to live on her own and work at the Sears & Roebuck glove counter in Chicago. There she meets Annie - a bold, outspoken feminist who challenges Katherine's idea of who she thinks she is and what she thinks she wants in life.
In 1997 Katherine's daughter, Joan, travels to Lawrence, Kansas, to clean out her estranged mother's house. Hidden away in an old suitcase, she finds a wooden box containing trinkets and a packet of sealed letters to a person identified only by a first initial.
Joan reads the unsent letters and discovers a woman completely different from the aloof and unyielding mother of her youth - a woman who had loved deeply and lost that love to circumstances beyond her control. Now she just has to find the strength to use the healing power of empathy and forgiveness to live the life she's always wanted to live.

I had read the book and loved it. I thought the audio was wonderful too. I found myself looking for excuse to take a drive or do yard work. Anything to slip on my ear buds and get back to the story.
"Beautifully written story of love and friendship."
I throughly enjoyed this story of love and friendship. The mystery behind Catherine and Annie's love affair was especially exciting! I would love to read a "prequel" about Annie.
"Wonderful tale through time."
I love the story. The characters connections and the way the storyline moves through time. I wish the reader had been a bit more animated in the reading of the book. It felt like she was reading a letter.
"Terrific plot that keeps you guessing and on your toes. Gripping!!"
This book didn't grab me at first but I stuck with it and loved they way it developed leaving me longing for more.
"Loved Letters Never Sent!"
At the top of my list for sure!
Annie of course! She was a woman ahead of her time! Bold, honest and true to herself.
Her voice was super easy to listen too!
YES, unfortunately time did not permit :-)
One of my all time favorite books!!!
The story was very well written the ending was a surprise! I didn't care for the narration!
What a great story. I will listen to this one over and over. It has to be one of the best ones I have listened to in a long time.
"You won't be disappointed and worth every second!"
This is very well written and is one that you won't be able to stop. Anytime I had to stop listening, I couldn't wait to get back to it. I love the story. It goes back and forth in time and is easy to keep up with. A beautiful love story.
"Poorly written; couldn't get through it!"
I couldn't stop rolling my eyes at this main character who keeps muttering to herself! This is a badly written book, performed in a ridiculous manner.
Weird emphasis on words, overly dramatic.
It has a homey, familiar backdrop.
I really liked the book, though I can't rate as a favorite. Really good though!
