Librarian Syd Murphy flees the carnage of a failed marriage by accepting an 18-month position in Jericho - a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. Her plans to hide out and heal her wounds fall by the wayside as she gets drawn into the daily lives of the quirky locals. She becomes fast friends with Maddie Stevenson, the enigmatic physician who has returned to the backcountry community to take over her late father's medical practice. Together they learn that life and love can have as many twists and turns as a country road.

I have listened to too many audio books to rank that. I have 87 in my audio library and was disappointed with only a couple!
In my opinion, the narrator of any book is as important as the story. If you don't have a good narrator it will not bring the characters to life.
Jericho was the first book by Ann McMan that I had purchased. I bought it on the recommendation of Audible and listened to the short sample. I was not disappointed! I really enjoyed listening to this book. I liked the characters Maddie and Syd, and I loved the banter they shared. The author has a wonderful sense of humour! When I had finished this audio book I went on to Amazon to see if she had any other work. I was thrilled to see there was a sequel, ‘Aftermath’ which I immediately purchased. Again, I was not disappointed! I look forward to the 3rd book in the ‘Jericho’ series, ‘Patriarch’ I believe is out later this year!
Say something about yourself!
funny, heart stopping, anxiety
i cant seem to find any other book to compare this one to for some reason.
I loved Maddie. She is so funny, determined and loving. i love the way how she stuck to not making a move on a straight woman as she didn't want to scare Sid off. Even when Sid finally made a move she was determined not to rush anything.
drive a woman crazy
must say this book had me cursing morning noon and night. I was on edge waiting to see when the hell one of them would make a move.
I can truly say I loved it all but most of all, the journey of Syd and Maddie and their path they found to each other, the friendships formed and on a personal note, for me the acceptance that came for Syd from her family. If that isn't enough of an emotional journey (and frustrating at times - in a good way), the friendships, humour (laugh out loud so don't be surprised if people start looking at you funny :-P) and other characters like David, Michael and all the other residents of Jericho will absolutely make you stay tuned until the end......you will want more!!!! The narrator is also excellent and really brings the story to life.
Snow Falls, from Gerri Hill. Similar journey to Syd and Maddie. A journey of meeting your should and life partner, the questions it raised about what you thought you knew about yourself and the joys of what happens next...
Yes, Aftermath, which is the follow up from Jericho and another MUST HAVE! As always she reads very well, really takes you on a journey through the book. The emotion that comes across in her voice when excitement, joy and sadness happens, really makes the characters come alive and pulls you in to the story. I have also just started listening to Hoosier Daddy and already cant stop listening.
ABSOLUTELY! The humour is fantastic, you cant help but laugh out loud. Due to the book being so well written and narrated, you cant help but shed a tear every now and then and off course share in the joys of all the good stuff happening as well.
Overall Jericho was a fantastic book to listen to. The characters and their development is really wonderful. The journey of Syd and Maddie, absolutely beautiful and their lives entwined with all the characters in Jericho is a real treat. I don't want to give the plot away but all and all at the end I had to have more and went to buy Aftermath, the follow up to Jericho, immediately after.
Right at the top, I enjoyed the tiny references to Xena that only a fan would find..like "Don't go all Xena on me" and 'I have many skills'. It was hard for me not to put the characters from the TV show into a modern day setting. The banter between Maddie and Syd starts out charming and ends up a little annoying. There's far to many ..'Oh my gods' and eye rolling and raised eyebrows. The character's are perfect..too perfect, Maddie is accomplished in EVERYTING and I mean EVERYTHING. Six foot of poised beautiful brunette perfection and Syd, short blond and very cute. For those fond of Xena, like I am, the descriptions of the two women are unmistakable to me.The relationship between the two characters becomes a little unreal..I don't think Maddie's pain from her past relationship or death of her father isn't defined enough.Do 'perfect' lesbians like this exist...
Maddie..no Syd..no Maddie..oh I don't know, I can't pick.
Her voice..I don't know what I fell in love with first..Maddie, Syd or the Narrators voice.
When they finally get it together
I was ill with a virus when I listened to this book..nailed it over 4 days, I could listen to that voice for hours..and did.
In some respects yes as the audio, so well narrated, brings the characters to life. Being a Brit it is hard to imagine the accents of the characters and the narrator does them so well. However, it is hard to be better than the original story.
Safe Harbor by Radclyffe. Mainly because it has a similar balance of humour and pathos, the story has many subplots and the Narrator is good.
There are so many scenes it is hard to pick one. On the comedy side the scene of David and Maddie over the so called broken coffee machine, or the one when it suddenly dawns on Syd that Maddie is the pilot going to fly their plane. A more poignant scene is the one where Maddie persuades Celine to tell her why her marriage broke up.
Would if I could, but with over 21 hours of listening, very good value by the way, I couldn't if I tried.
This is my go to book when feeling low and I have listened to the narration many, many times and always found something new I had not picked up on. Also because the novel has many positive sub plots, as well as the romance, it gives me a boost and a feeling of warmth each time I listen to it. There is quite a lot of humour in the book, which the narrator gets just right, and I still find myself chuckling over certain scenes despite the fact that I have heard them many times before. How Maddie has not strangled David by the end of the book I've yet to figure. To me Ms McMan has written a timeless classic, which Christine Williams has brought to life with her clever narration. The book is a fine balance between humour and pathos, which really works.
I quite enjoyed the first half of the book. Nice long build-up to a relationship in a genre that often sees the main characters leaping into bed and professing undying love after a few days. Unfortunately, the dialog between the two women or their friends (David/Michael) just got painful! Far too long, far too "fabulous", it just came off as contrived and boring. I started skipping forward 30 seconds at a time until the painful conversations were over. It was a struggle to finish for me, but reading other comments, I can see that some people liked it AND the infernal banter, so go figure.
It exceeded my expectations. Now not only do I need more of ann McMan I also need to know what gap pens to dud and Maddie
. Not to mention David Michael Peter and Henry.
The performance is enchanting just like tee people if Jericho.
"As Good As Advertised"
The setting for this book is the area where I was born and not far from where I now live. That was my original reason for risking a credit on 21 hour book. It is usually difficult to sustain interest in a book that long because there is often a lot of filler material in a book that long. There is some of that in this one but I'm glad I gave this selection a chance.
The twenty one hours went by much quicker than I thought they would because this is an excellent audiobook. This in spite of the fact that it took the two of them longer to make a move on each other than it has any couple thus far in the 21st century. The verbal sparring and repartee engaged in by Maddie and Syd as well as between David and Maddie is both witty and funny. I'm not sure how old the author is but the sexual banter between the two of them has all the wit and verve of a Three's Company episode. An excellent touch here is so much of the activities and dialogue of the people in a small mountain town that the author gets right. Far too often authors or narrators unfamiliar with the area try to shortcut getting right by assuming all southern towns, as well as all southern accents are the same. Well they're wrong; no matter how much they might believe Carroll O'Conner in 'The Heat of the Night' and Andy Griffith talk the same; they don't. Roma Jean Fremont the girl who continually falls down around Doctor Maddie Stevenson isn't fall down funny but is a nice little humorous aside.
This is one of the better audiobooks I've listened to for awhile; great story.
"Great chemistry between characters w/LOL moments"
Good story with lots of colorful characters and interesting plot lines. Really liked the chemistry between Mattie and Syd. While I know the story continues into the book Aftermath, I almost wish McMan had decided to expand on and flush out several of the storylines more completely. Ultimately I think this could have been split things up into 2+ books. Might have read smoother in the last 1/3 of the book where there was a lot going on and things being brushed over. That said, I still highly recommend this book as a great listen. Found myself relating to many things. 👍👍
This story is awesome you will laugh the characters are great and the storyline is exciting and refreshing. One of the best audiobooks I have listen to in long time.
Don't miss this one! Jericho is a delightful story of love that dares to speak its name in the heart of Dixie.
"sweet coming out story."
Pleasant, really sweet coming out story. I recommended. Positive lesbian characters. Good narration.
"Very well written"
I love the writing in this book. Ann does a fantastic job developing the characters and storyline. I really appreciated the lack of rush to the physical. It gave more of a chance to enjoy the characters. The comedic inserts were fabulous and right on time! Well done!
I do believe this is my 3rd time listening to this book...and I have no doubt I will listen to it many more times. Absolutely one of my favorites. ..you can feel the love and the humor is the best! Do not pass this one up!
Wonderful book. Captivating characters, drama, and brilliantly, subtle wit. Christine Williams does a great job narrating. Definitely recommend!
"What a surprise"
When I picked up this audio book, I didn't know anything about Ann McMan. I was just looking for the biggest bang for my buck. I now own the both audio and ebook, and read and/or listen to them regularly. The character are human and down to earth, and it doesn't take long to be right in the middle of their lives.
Why, David of course. In David's eyes (and mouth) the truth is the truth, and it must be said.
The first chapter to the last.
This is an amazing book, that everyone whether straight or lesbian should have. It is real life and how things can change when you are open. It is about real friends and taking chances. If you are sitting on the fence about this book, take a chance.....I promise you will not be disappointed.
"Very Enjoyable Audible Book"
Really enjoyed listening to this audible book on my long ride to and from work. Am definitely going to get the next one in the series!
