Audible Editor Reviews

Jack & Harry: No Turning Back, narrated in clear and empathetic tones by Australian David Tredinnick, is a rollicking adventure tale, set in Perth in 1950, about two young well-adjusted boys who are falsely accused of stealing. Blowing their plight out of proportion to the supposed crime at hand, the two impulsively flee town, getting the cash to do so from a wild and well-placed bet, and begin an exciting, difficult, and epic madcap journey across the Great Outback.

A fun coming-of-age story and lively road trip tale.

Publisher's Summary

A great Australian yarn about a bold Australian outback adventure belonging to another time in another world, inspired by a true story. The happy routine life of two Perth boys is shattered one November day in 1950 when they are falsely accused of theft. With fabricated evidence mounting against them they decide to run away from their homes and families to avoid prosecution and pooling their meager pocket money they back the winner of the Melbourne Cup and fund an escape.

What the Critics Say

"This coming-of-age story, set in Australia in 1950, centers on two boys from a safe suburban world. Thinking they're in trouble, the pals decide to run away. Soon, they face new adventures and daunting challenges head-on. David Tredinnick is nothing short of outstanding as the boys travel, meeting a happy-go-lucky Irishman, a soft-spoken priest, an older Aborigine man and his nephew, and many others. Each voice for more than a dozen unique characters sounds perfectly distinct. Tones vary for the boys' parents, a classmate is given a nasal whine, and an Italian miner and a Middle Eastern man have appropriate accents that never waver. It's an exciting trip for the boys and for listeners, as well, as the two mates discover the true definition of home." (AudioFile, Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award)

I read this book and loved the boys own adventure before listening to it, David Tredinnick does a great job of giving all of the characters personalities to life.

    A great holiday listen.

"A favorite of Dad and the boys"

I listened to this to verify it was ok for kids. Often Audible kids books are not appropriate in my opinion. Some good lessons but nothing too deep, just a fun adventure of some young boys. My boys love to listen to this one on road trips. Narrator has a fun Australian accent.
