Sir Kingsley William Amis 1922 in London geboren, war ein englischer Schriftsteller und Dichter. Er studierte Anglistik in Oxford und war nach seiner Militärzeit Englisch-Dozent an den Universitäten in Swansea und Cambridge. Sein erster Roman "Glück für Jim" ("Lucky Jim") gilt als typisches Werk dieser Zeit und wurde mit dem Somerset Maugham Award ausgezeichnet. Für einen weiteren, gesellschaftskritischen Roman "The Old Devils" bekam er 1986 den Booker Prize. 1990 erhielt er von der englischen Königin den Ritterschlag.
