David escapes from the concentration camp where he has spent his entire life and flees across Europe. He is utterly alone - who can he trust? What will await him? And all the while, how can he be sure that they won't catch up with him...David learns that his polite manner, his haunted eyes and his thin features are strange to other people. He must learn to fend for himself in this strange new world.
This is The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas meets Jonathan Safran Foer for children. An incredible story of survival against all odds and self discovery.

I read the book years ago, and having listened to it, I'm still disappointed with the ending. Other then that it's good.
Read this book at school when I was 14 and loved it. came back to see if it was as good as I remembered and all I can say is even better when it's read aloud to you. highly recommended...
"Character of a Child"
This is quite simply one of the most beautiful, heart rendering stories I have ever heard. Breaking down every barrier, looking deep into the human spirit, revealing the good in a boy who had every reason to be bitter, to be broken beyond repair, this historical tale brings the reader from the child's escape from a concentration camp through his journey through Europe. The genuine, forthright way that David deals with his environment, the people he meets, those who would harm him or help him is touching, amazing, thought provoking. That a child who had escaped from a lifetime in a concentration camp could have such compassion and reasoning of right and wrong, that he would choose to believe in "the God of the green pastures" . . . the God of the David in the Bible . . . well, it goes to show that words, even few words spoken to children with ears to hear are sometimes retained. Though the book is historical fiction, it is true to the times, and well could have happened. God bless those who lost family members in the concentration camps . . . God bless those who survived . . . and God help us all who let it happen.
"David stole my heart"
The way the writer describes the surroundings
Every little detail, especially the way David pray
Every time he calls out to the God of the Green Pasture, it is sooooo sincere
When you surging for something bigger than yourself, do as David: God of the green pastures..... it is me... David
Read this book 3 times, listen to this book twice already, only downloaded it in this week
"Well worth a listen"
I've loved this book since I had to read it in year 8 at school. The story is intriguing and the main character, David, grows and develops as the story unfolds. It was well read and flowed smoothly. I'd definitely recommend this one!
"I Am David"
I had no expectations when I bought this book. It's succeeded in blowing me away. What an amazing story. And the narration is fantastic.
[Spoiler alert] When Maria helps him smile for the first time.
Not sure. But his narration is delightful.
See the God of green pastures at work!
Loved the adventurous red thread throughout this story. Didn't want to put it down.
My sixth grade teacher read this to us once and for some reason I still remember it, at least bits and pieces, till now almost two decades later. I decided to hear it again and I'm glad I did. The narration was excellent. The story is exquisite, with so many important themes and I think some gospel overtures as well. Very well worth it!
"Awesome and inspiring book. Read it twice."

"So beautiful it broke my heart"
Never knew a children's story could move me to tears quite like this one did. To see the world through this special little boys eyes and to see the inner workings of his mind, pure and just.
Well written and well read! I had hoped for a ending as detailed as the entire story. But enjoyed it anyway.
