1200 A.D. - After decades of warring between the Lairds of Kerr and Prudhoe Castle in Northumbria, a tentative peace is reached. The Lady Carington Kerr is sent to Prudhoe as a hostage to ensure her father's good behavior, and a more reluctant hostage there never was.
Small and dark, with emerald eyes and a luscious figure, she is as gorgeous as she is fiery. Enter Sir Creed de Reyne; a gentle giant of a man, he is, by nature, calm and wise. He is the ice to Carington's fire. As Carington resists the attempts to keep her in her English prison, Creed is placed in charge of the captive as both jailer and protector.
But Creed is also as reluctant a protector as she is a hostage; six months prior, he had been given the important assignment of escorting Isabella of Angouleme from France to England as the bride of King John. Isabella, a woman-child of twelve years, was smitten with Creed from the start. When he spurned her advances, she fabricated a story of Creed's indiscretions against her and brought the king's wrath upon him. Creed fled to Prudhoe and straight into another assignment guarding a firebrand of a young woman.
Creed soon discovers that Carington is far different from the petty child who would become queen and against both his judgment and his wishes, he falls for the Scots lass. Suffering through tragedy and triumph, Creed and Carington have a love that only strengthens with each passing moment. Even when Creed is forced to flee for his life and leave Carington behind, their only thoughts are of being together again.
With Isabella and King John closing in, Creed and Carington must fight for their very survival as two countries and a kingdom seek to separate them.

"I devoured the GUARDIAN OF DARKNESS"
I do prefer the written version, but the audio version is also excellent. Brad Willis has an excellent voice as a narrator!
This story was fantastic from beginning to end; really breathtaking!
The several scenes of tenderness and passion between Creed, a handsome and calm English knight and Carington, a fierce, stubborn, headstrong young Scottish lady!
After listening to this audio, I felt consumed by beautiful emotions that I never wanted to end.
This author is a storyteller that gets you hooked the moment you start reading her stories. She skillfully blended romance and intrigue and weaved her characters into her story. I devoured this book! I strongly recommend her books because she never disappoints!
"I tried but couldn't stop listening! OMG !!!"
If you love historical romance then just get the book. Don't worry about Brad Wills being able to voice you through it. He does such a great job! Love his voice! OMG, I just about swooned at that deep voice! Think he put a spell on me?! I stayed up for the past several nights just listening to see what happened next. You HAVE to get this book if you truly love historical romances and deep sexy male voices. :)
"Couldn't Put It Down!"
Absolutely! The story of Creed de Reyne and Carington Kerr is a wonderful love story filled with passion, adventure, humor, and danger. Creed is a strong, silent knight assigned to be the "keeper" of Carington who is a hostage in the English castle of Prudhoe, as part of a peace accord brokered between the castle's owner and her father, a Scottish Laird. He cannot help but fall for Carington with her fiery personality and doll like beauty. She is drawn to the calm and gorgeous knight. But, before they can have their HEA, a series of perilous events and conflicts threaten to keep them apart. The story is told by narrator Brad Wills, who was terrific! He tells the story in his beautiful voice and keeps the audience waiting for the next step in the storyline. Wills performed each character wonderfully, and I especially liked his portrayal of Carington, with her Scottish brogue.
I loved the story of two people from very different worlds, considered enemies, who despite their backgrounds fell in love. It is the very essence of romance! I really enjoyed the relationships between the characters, their friends and families. The emphasis on honor, loyalty, and integrity that is part of the chivalry of the era is so appealing.
This is the first time I have heard a story narrated by Brad Wills, and he was terrific! I'd like to hear other audiobooks he has narrated. I enjoyed his enunciation and his mild accent, which made him sound as if he were a native of the era and locale. I appreciate the manner in which he could change from one character to the next seamlessly, just like performing in a theater setting. He was truly fantastic!
The humor in the story had me chuckling to myself at several points, and I sighed in sadness more than once. The plot itself affected me emotionally and the narrator had a way of bringing it all out of me as an audience member.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Guardian of Darkness", and am a fan of historical romance novels. Kathryn LeVeque's novels are the best, and to have this one performed in an audiobook with such a talented narrator was amazing. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes a romance, an adventure, a really great time!
"A Great Historical Romance!"
This was my first story I've listened to written by Kathryn Le Veque, and it will not be my last. I thought she did a great job capturing the time period, the story reflected both how romantic and brutal these times could be.
Great story, full of romance, action and suspense!
"Another Le Veque Winner"
I would recommend anything from Kathryn Le Veque. Each novel is a different story with intrigue, love, action and adventure!
It's hard to go wrong with Kathryn Le Veque!
"Love, love, love this book!"
This is one of the few romance books I have read where the author kills characters easily and then moves on without too much dwelling. But again, I can’t fault the author since life is not always sweet and perfect. I usually read romance so that I am not exposed to sadness and stress but the death of one character deeply saddened me but again c’est la vie.
To sum up the book, great storyline, strong characters and yet at the same time weak since they relied so heavily on emotional support from their loved ones. An emotional ride in parts and the sweetest ending. Purchase without hesitation.
"I canNOT a get enough of Kathryn Le Veque"
I am just amazed at how wonderful each of Kathryn's books are - from start to finish! And the narration was fantastic. This was a rich medieval historical romance without a lot of nonsense misunderstandings etc. The love evolves and we get to see them grow in love - with the "I Love You" occurring well before the last chapter such that we can see 'how' these characters love each other now and will interact in the future.
The main angst comes not from their love but outside forces (which I have noticed is a consistent theme with this author - and one I like). There is warmth and humor and passion, and as with other books by this author there is some tragedy to endure - BUT never fear as we get an amazing happily ever after (the epilogue was priceless).
"I loved it!"
I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I loved it. Couldn't stop listening. It was touching, humorous and sad. Where can I find a Sir Creed? Narrator Brad Wills used a heavenly deep voice for Creed. A well done book.
"Medieval Romance with Intrigue"
Lady Kerr was immature, not happy at being handed over by her father as a hostage-for-peace, and determined to find a way back home. She acted out without thought and wound up making one dangerous mistake after another. Despite finding her beautiful, her guardian Sir Creed did not appreciate being saddled with her, nor her antics. He'd already had his problems with women and didn't need another, especially one that was in danger just by virtue of being a Scottish woman among the English. Sir Creed was often torn between doing what was right and what made sense, and finding ways to keep Lady Kerr safe. Not being perfect, this made for difficult decisions and not always the best outcomes.
None that I've read. Most medieval romances I've read involved near-perfect heroes, who overcame all through sheer force or might. In this book, love and good sense turned out to be the conquering factor.
After having traveled to her new temporary residence, Lady Kerr met two young boys that lacked manners and were free to do as they chose. Being immature herself, her reaction to them was unexpected, but priceless.
Love happens where you least expect it.
"Sexist voice I have thus far heard for audiobook!"
Yes even though the story has been done numerous times of opposites attracting and falling in love even by Ms. Le Veque. The stoic emotional-less big handsome English knight and hero Creed meets by becoming her ward and somewhat protector of the fiery short-tempered beautiful Scottish heroine Carington. Creed becomes the only one to watch her due to her behavior to everyone else. Creed's liege grants possession for peace from the opposing Scottish clan their much beloved daughter Carington. Ms. Le Veque had her own unique spin on it which made it that much more exciting! Lastly the deep seductive entrancing compelling voice talents of Mr. Brad Wills made this a joy and quite as sensuous to listen too!.
I loved the hero Creed. Everyone it seemed wanted him for either all the right reasons and the wrong ones as well. Creed seemed to come across as a very humble and modest person. Even with false allegations towards him he remains cool, calm, collected and just the perfect knight.
Again it was Creed since Mr. Wills voice was just the perfect blend of masculinity but deep and quite mysterious too. I felt his voice pretty much oozed passion, sensualism and was so down right sexy breathing new character into the hero.
I think I was laughing and crying as the book progressed with all the plot twists and turns that were happening. Especially everything that Creed goes through its quite a lot from people not supporting him, the king, death and even Carington he just takes everything in stride.
Out of all the audiobooks I own this was made me think all sorts of lascivious thoughts despite the story not being that erotic. I just couldn't help it I totally just fell in love and loved Mr. Wills deep bass voice as not only the narrator but in him portraying all of the characters as well!
