Publisher's Summary

Worldwide best-selling author Wilbur Smith will take you on an incredible journey on the thrashing seas off the coast of Africa in this glorious return to the series that made him who he is: The Courtney series.

East African coast, 1670.

In a time of brave and brutal adventure, one man will journey across land and sea to pursue his greatest enemy....

The Golden Bough, captained by Henry 'Hal' Courtney, is running south from Ethiopia to Zanzibar. Below deck, both his crew and his lover, the fearless warrior Judith Nazet, sleep. As the moon glints through clouds, Hal sights a ship passing close by. Although there is an uneasy truce between the warring English and Dutch, Hal scents danger. When the Bough is boarded, the crew must go hand to hand to defend their ship and their lives.

But soon Hal will face even graver danger, as he discovers his mortal enemy still lives and is hell-bent on revenge. he must pursue his nemesis across desert savannah, through the seedy underbelly of Zanzibar's slave markets and shark-infested waters, imperilling his own life at every turn. But it will take more than a slave's shackles to hold Hal Courtney....

A thrilling blend of extraordinary drama and epic storytelling, Golden Lion sees Wilbur Smith return in triumphant form to the adventures of his beloved and bestselling Courtney family.

    "wow!"

This is one of Wilbur Smith's best. A fabulous tale of seafaring courage, with the usual assortment of rouges, fighting, incarceration, and escape. brilliant writing, excellent narration, and a thoroughly engaging listen. I have listened to many of smith's books, and find the abridged versions significantly lacking, and so with this unabridged version you get the full force of his work. Highly recommended.

"Good story and characters filled out as usual."

Wilbur was going on holiday and tied up the end suddenly. Exciting and engaging but the end needs more details.

a great read, would love to know when this was written, the sequence of his stories would really benefit the readers understanding of WS writing and story telling would bring him to life for this fan in particular

    "Golden Lion"

Disappointment for a Wilbur Smith book. I found the story very average. The narration however was brilliantly performed.

    "old or out dated?"
What would have made Golden Lion better?

I have so much enjoyed all of Wilbur Smith's books, but he was off track with the Nile series and this is the worst of the others.
It is just too much made up and extravagant.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Simply disappointing. Out dated?
Might it be that we live in a different era now?

    "Worst Wilbur Smith Book Ever"
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

    no one

What was most disappointing about Wilbur Smith and Giles Kristian ’s story?

It was not like a wilbur smith book totally different most disappointing and unreadable narrator was not easy to listen to

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Sean Barrett?

Simon Vance (fromn the quest so much better)

What character would you cut from Golden Lion?

    the second writer

    Any additional comments?

WILBUR SMITH PLEASE GO BACK TO WRITING ALONE

    "Disappointing"
What would have made Golden Lion better?

A less predictable plot and richer character development.

What could Wilbur Smith and Giles Kristian have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Is this really a Wilbur Smith novel? Who is Giles Kristian?

Would you be willing to try another one of Sean Barrett’s performances?

I'm not sure any narrator would have done much better, so, yes I'll try again.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment.

    Any additional comments?

I found the story line flat and quite predictable and, unlike Smith's previous novels, particularly the Courtney series, Golden Lion's characters seem quite fuzzy and one-dimensional. Very disappointing. When will we get more of his older novels in unabridged audio?
