Summary

Maverick author Hunter S. Thompson introduced the world to "gonzo journalism" with this cult classic that shot back up the best-seller lists after Thompson's suicide in 2005. No book ever written has more perfectly captured the spirit of the 1960s counterculture. In Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, Raoul Duke (Thompson) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (inspired by a friend of Thompson) are quickly diverted to search for the American dream. Their quest is fueled by nearly every drug imaginable and quickly becomes a surreal experience that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. But there is more to this hilarious tale than reckless behavior, for underneath the hallucinogenic facade is a stinging criticism of American greed and consumerism.

Just the best

It needs no intro...none at all...really it needs nothing more to be said about it...it's just best.

Good listen

Where does Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Its a good book, well known and i can see why. I was recommend to read the book from one of my friends.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?

There was lots the whole book was an interesting listen. Very peculiar, different from my normal listen so it was a nice break.

Any additional comments?

I thought the narration was great, perfect fit for the story. I found the book slightly jumbled at times. Although come to think about it trying to keep along to this while driving might not be the best idea! in addition to that it might of been the authors intention due to the nature of the.....experience they're having.

Hilarious

Very good listen. Experience with psychedelics increases appreciation for the story however. I Highly recommend.

Roller coaster ride of drug abuse

The narration of the book helps to make the disjointed nature of the story roll along more evenly than you would expect. it is well told and the characters come alive. it is hard to believe that this book was written over forty years ago as certain aspects of the culture and lifestyle are as fresh today as they were then and nothing seems dated, it seems relevant, almost as if you could have the same wild adventure today as you could then and nothing would have changed except for the names of the politicians. All in all a solid 5/5 and highly recommended by this listener.

Decidedly Average

Second HST book I've read on audible and I can't say I get the hype, so many people say he's their favourite author but I just don't get it. Maybe I expected too much.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

For the first time ever, I really don't know how to review this book. It's a difficult one to discuss. I enjoyed it. It's funny, it's horrible, and it's nonsensical all rolled into one. Maybe that's what being on drugs is like? I've never done drugs before, so I can't relate. This book isn't going to be for everybody; it can be crass, disturbing, violent, and downright weird. But it works for me, and I enjoyed it. The characters are great, and their adventures in Las Vegas are quite one of a kind journey that I think we should all take by reading this book. It a book I won't be forgetting anytime soon. 7/10

Looking for the American Dream ...

Bravura exploration of ‘How low can you go?’ Underneath nihilistic depravity, disgust and gross-out headbanging, delicately balanced, is aching sensitivity, like Frankenstein’s monster quoting Milton. And there’s the pathos of a beautiful life in the losing. ‘Cut is the branch that might have grown full straight / And burnèd is Apollo’s laurel bough.’ But – hey kids! – who gives a f***?
