Gioconda Belli provides a most enjoyable way to get a view of a bit of the history of Spain, and Europe more widely at the turn of the 16th century, through the story of Juana la Loca, and the very bleak environment created by the Reyes Catholicos, her parents and her arbitrary and grandiose, but beautiful, husband. Her own children show themselves to be just as bad as soon as power is within reach. The language is direct and simple enough for a student of Spanish such as myself to enjoy, but even with that linguistic handicap, it is evident that it is well written. The narrator Adriana Sananes is also excellent -- clear, well-modulated voice with a good characterisation achieved through moderating tone and pitch. At nearly 13 hours this is quite long, but I would happily listen to her for another book or more. I bought this book for its subject before discovering what a distinguished author I was reading - It is well-worth looking her up in Wikipedia: a fascinating and brave career, and from the book a delightfully warm personality. On the downside, I was never quite convinced by the 20th century story which provides the frame, but even that was thought provoking. In summary, thoroughly recommended, but not a masterwork to bowl you over.
Creo que el final de la historia fue forzado para acabar rápido. Me hubiera gustado otro desenlace pero no esta nada mal la historia como tal.
la forma en que se narra la historia
Juana, es una mujer muy valiente e inteligente pra su epoca
todas me gustaron
recomiendo mucho este audio libro
"Fascinating story, unevenly told"
The story of Juana of Castile is intriguing and the premise of telling her story through Lucia, a young, orphaned school girl seemed promising. Unfortunately, I found Lucia's story annoying more often than not -- some aspects seem to be drawn too obviously from the author's own personal early history and sexual activity (The Country Under My Skin). Manuel comes across as a shallowly drawn character exacerbated by the rather wooden narration for his character. I felt the relationship between Manuel and Lucia seemed superficial and unrealistic, never really taking off so that the reader cared about either of them. Juana is a compelling character, but at times is delivered like a Wikipedia profile of her life and history.
I felt that the parallel story lines become contrived and even silly at points. The 'steamy' sections were rather on the clinical side and did not advance the story except to ensure that both Juana and Lucia were both pregnant at the same time and facing terrible life choices, purportedly to make both stories more powerful. Didn't do the job.
Having said that, I far preferred listening to the story (in Spanish) on Audible rather than reading it (also in Spanish) as I had originally tried several years ago when I just stalled out.
Gioconda Belli is a talented writer with interesting ideas and stories to tell. I enjoyed this effort of hers more than the above would indicate. Just wish more of her poetic side had shone through and that her editor had exercised more judgment.
