"great book but not as advertised"

This book is narrated superbly by valentine dyall. Anyone familiar with the bbc radio series "appointment with fear" will recognise his oaken tones & cut glass vowels. The prose, being du Maurier is practically flawless and this would have been a 5 star review had the book contained all of the stories listed in the publisher's description. The printed volume contains 9 stories, the audiobook contains 5. "The pool", "the apple tree", "the blue lenses" & "the chamois" are all omitted. This is therefore not an unabridged recording as stated. Very disappointing for that reason.

    "Interesting"

Interesting, though I enjoyed the stories to variable extent. Narrator was fine - not exceptional, but solid. Not as good as her longer work, but worth checking out.

    "Brilliant stories, appalling delivery"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    An entirely different narrator

Would you be willing to try another one of Valentine Dyall’s performances?

    Never

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment

    Any additional comments?

Utterly brilliant stories. The delivery is truly terrible. The accents are literally laughable. Daphne du Maurier is a master story teller. For them to be delivered in this way will put off many people from experiencing her brilliance.

"The book is better than the movie"
Would you consider the audio edition of Echoes from the Macabre to be better than the print version?

I bought this mainly for one story, The Birds. I had the audio version of this on cassette and it had eventually fallen apart. This was the version I had and this reader is amazing. So this review will be mainly on the one story, although all the stories are good, this is my favorite.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Echoes from the Macabre?

Nat's discovery of the death of his neighbors and employers the Triggs. Very creepy and quite unforgetable.

Have you listened to any of Valentine Dyall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    See above.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

IT SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME!!!! The first time I listened to this, I was driving to Chicago alone, late at night. In the dark. No lights. Again, ALONE!!! Need I say more?

    Any additional comments?

This is a collection of DuMaurier's lesser known stories. It should be heard or read, these should never be forgotten. It won't be by me, that's for sure.
