Summary

Based on real historical events.

A time for vengeance. German frontier: Close to the Rhine, a Roman centurion, Lucius Tullus, prepares to take his soldiers on patrol. On the opposite side of the river, German tribes are resentful of the harsh taxes about to be imposed upon them. Suspicious that there might be unrest, Tullus knows that his men's survival will be determined not just by their training and discipline, but by his leadership.

A time for war. What neither Tullus nor his commander, Governor Varus, realise is that ranged against them is the charismatic chieftain and trusted ally of Rome, Arminius, who has long been plotting to drive the Romans from the tribal lands east of the Rhine.

A time to die. As Varus' legions prepare to leave their summer encampment, thousands of warriors - directed by Arminius - are massing nearby. Eager to throw off the Roman yoke, the tribesmen prepare a deadly ambush. Only the gods can save the Romans now....

Best Ever from Ben Kane

The narration of this story was first class, characters were clearly defined and brought to life. It was also a fascinating perspective based on true events with the fictionalised elements woven very neatly around the facts. Altogether an excellent listen made possible by a professional narration and an inventive imaginative Ben Kane

Great Read

What did you like most about Eagles at War?

The fact that the events are accurate and Ben has tried to be as historically true to the events make this book stand out.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Eagles at War?

Going back in the night to find the Women, Child and Pup.

What does David Rintoul bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Pronunciation of Roman names and Places :)

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Even though I knew the ending it kept be listening to find out how and the detail added in that is then explained in the authors note is quite fascinating.

Any additional comments?

Hope for more :)

Excellent Roman historical fiction

Characters well developed. Story moves along well. Follows historical events well. This book had everything I need in a period story. Use of discovered artifacts in the storyline is a very nice touch. I bought the next book. For me, thats good praise.

I have dumped more than one series in mid-book because of ridiculous characters, repetitive tropes, complete changes of history and historical errors.

Well done.

Blood and thunder - literally!

I've been a big fan of Ben Kane's since his very first Forgotten Legion series, and I was reading his first Spartacus novel in the hospital just after my son was born. I really wanted to check out this new series of his, but I don't have much time to read these days so the Audible version was downloaded as soon as I had a spare credit.
The narrator is excellent, really putting himself into the tale and acting rather than simply reading which I really enjoy.
The tale, based on a true story, is a good one, with a few nice twists and turns, some good characters and an ending that sets up the rest of the series very nicely.
I liked the way the author made me wonder who I should be rooting for - who was the "goodie" and who was the "baddie"? In most books that is very clear cut but here you empathise with both sides and that elevates this work above the usual run-of-the-mill action romp.
If I have a criticism it's the fact that a certain character was blind to what was coming, even when it was pointed out to him on more than one occasion. It seemed so obvious that it made the guy in question come across as a bit of a fool but I suppose this is something authors must deal with when they choose to write about true events and people.

Overall, another great book by Ben Kane, although I personally liked the Spartacus novel better and will be downloading the second in that series next.

I should have read these sooner

Having being a fan of Ben Kane for a while, I had never got round to reading this trilogy. However once I did, I was hooked. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would heartily recommend it to fans of Ancient Rome and Ben Kane.
