Summary

At once a vivid, haunting reimagining of 1950s Britain, a gripping, humane spy thriller and a poignant love story, with Dominion C. J. Sansom once again asserts himself as the master of the historical novel.

1952. Twelve years have passed since Churchill lost to the appeasers and Britain surrendered to Nazi Germany after Dunkirk. As the long German war against Russia rages on in the east, the British people find themselves under dark authoritarian rule: the press, radio and television are controlled; the streets patrolled by violent auxiliary police and British Jews face ever greater constraints. There are terrible rumours too about what is happening in the basement of the German Embassy at Senate House.

Defiance, though, is growing. In Britain, Winston Churchill's Resistance organization is increasingly a thorn in the government's side. And in a Birmingham mental hospital an incarcerated scientist, Frank Muncaster, may hold a secret that could change the balance of the world struggle for ever.

Civil Servant David Fitzgerald, secretly acting as a spy for the Resistance, is given the mission to rescue his old friend Frank and get him out of the country. Before long he, together with a disparate group of Resistance activists, will find themselves fugitives in the midst of London's Great Smog; as David's wife Sarah finds herself drawn into a world more terrifying than she ever could have imagined. And hard on their heels is Gestapo Sturmbannfuhrer Gunther Hoth, brilliant, implacable hunter of men . . .

'An absorbing, thoughtful, spy-politico thriller set in the fog-ridden London of 1952 . . . Part adventure, part espionage, all encompassed by terrific atmosphere and a well-argued “it might have been”. – The Times

Critic reviews

”Every note of this smoggy hell rings true. Yet this switched history also shows how hope might dawn to end the rule of ‘blood and fear’.” (The Independent, Boyd Tonkin)

”Haunting, vividly imagined novel…You will find few better historical novels, even if much of the history it uses never really happened.” (Sunday Times Culture, Nick Rennison)

"What would have happened had Britain surrendered to Nazi Germany after Dunkirk? CJ Sansom’s latest historical novel gives a gripping answer, featuring a 1952 England rife with oppression, rumour and defiant rebellion." (Sunday Telegraph Seven)

Quite long

The story does seem to be drawn out. It’s well told however it could do with being a bit shorter to keep the interest on an audible book. The narrator however was great.

A plausible counter factual cold war espionage

Would you consider the audio edition of Dominion to be better than the print version?

We both found this an engaging story from the beginning and what follows throughout the book is an intelligent well written plot. It's a good narration and the characters are convincingly portrayed. All in all a good listen!

Up there with the Shardlake books

C.J.S is a master at story telling. His is adaption of historical events (and with this one an alternate version) underlined by rich and hard not to love characters makes all his books page turners right to the end.

This one is up there with my favourite Shardlake books, fantastic story concept, well thought out characters each with a good background story that makes you care about each one and what happens to them.

Finally the narrator for this one was excellent, brilliant different voices and accents for each character brought this book to life.

Highly recommended!

Dominion (Sansom) review

This was an interesting historic fiction. A little bit slow to start but when it picked up the excitement and fear in the story were palpable. A gripping story until the epilogue. There was maybe a sequel in it but the writer tied all the loose ends in the last 20 minutes. The Narrator's voices were nearly all believable. A good performance though. I would recommend this book worthy of a read or a listen.

Stimulating and thought provoking book

This book is up to the very high standard of all C J Sansom's novels to date. The plot holds you enthralled and is beautifully paced which has the effect of making the listener feel that they are sharing the trials and tribulations of the major characters at first hand. In general the story maintains enough revelence to the true historical events to make it plausible. The only detail that jarred and prevented me from giving this book 5 stars is the casting of Enoch Powell as Secretary of State for India. Powell is man who voluntarily enlisted in 1939 as a private and rose through the ranks to be a Brigadier. His love for his country has never been in question and I am sure that he have joined with Churchill and helped to spearhead the resistance.

lf you liked 'Winter in Madrid', you'll love this.

I didn't want the story to end😪. The best book I've listened to by far in 22. The 2nd by this author and the first 20+ hr book. I'm sure a sequel could be made. I'll now listen to the author's entire library. Thank you 🙏❤

Thoroughly engaging

It’s an original concept, but I agree with some who think it takes time to get going, and is a little too long. But the narration is superb, with accents both male and female convincingly rendered. I’d look for more books with this reader.

Great listen

A very different book to others I’ve listened to from CJ, but thoroughly enjoyed this. To a little while to get going, but didn’t want it to end! Great narration too.
