Summary

Best-selling romance author Jenna Hardy, aka Cassandra Hart, sprints through life from one appearance to the next, always on deadline, always in demand, always on the arm of a different beautiful woman. She has no personal life, because her entire existence is public, and part of her appeal. She loves the tempo, the power, the thrill until the pace catches up to her and she collapses at a book signing.

Her doctor orders rest, her editor wants a three book series yesterday, and her attorney informs her she has just inherited a farm in the backcountry of Vermont. Divine intervention or Fate's little joke? The only thing that might possibly save her from dying of boredom during a summer of forced R and R is a dalliance with Gardner Davis, the local vet. Unfortunately, everything about Jenna's high-profile lifestyle is exactly what Gard wants to leave far, far behind. That and a dark secret that haunts the new life she's made.

Narrator ruins this with her Granny voice. Oh dear...

It is such a shame that this book is ruined by the narrator. Honestly, and I am not just saying this to sound mean, but the narrator has a little old granny voice. Now, this is a Radclyffe book, so you KNOW it will have steamy scenes. Steamy scenes read by a granny is what it sounds like. The actor may not be old at all, but the voice she chooses sounds like a little granny baking cookies, knitting a scarf and sitting in a rocking chair by a fire chuckling with her grandchildren. Worse still, is the Marge Simpson voice she uses for the character of Gard. So, as you listen to this book, you’re thinking of Jessica Fletcher and Marge Simpson, and well, it kinda ruins it if I’m honest. Especially the steamy scenes: Jessica fletcher getting it on with Marge Simpson. That might do it for you, and no disrespect to JB Fletcher or Marge, but it wasn’t what I expect from a Radclyffe book! On second thoughts, JB Fletcher and Marge together WOULD be a great story, but not with this book.
Story-wise: yeah, it’s ok. Not bad, not great, but an ok book. Maybe it would’ve sounded like a better story read by Abby Craden or someone else.
