Summary

Der pazifistische Jüngling Felix Bloch studiert Atomphysik bei Heisenberg in Leipzig, flüchtet 1933 in die USA und gerät nach Los Alamos, wo er Robert Oppenheimer beim Bau der Atombombe helfen soll. Die rebellische Musikantentochter Laura D'Oriano versucht sich als Sängerin und muss erkennen, dass ihr das Talent für die große Karriere fehlt. Bei Kriegsausbruch geht sie als Spionin für die Alliierten von Marseille nach Italien, ohne zu bemerken, dass Mussolinis Leute ihr auf Schritt und Tritt folgen.

Der Kunststudent Emile Gilliéron reist mit Schliemann nach Troja, zeichnet Vasen und restauriert Fresken, fertigt auf Wunsch auch Reproduktionen an - und stellt bald fest, dass es von der Kopie zur nicht deklarierten Fälschung nur ein kleiner Schritt ist. Nur einmal können die drei einander begegnet sein: im November 1924 am Hauptbahnhof Zürich, wo die Geschichte einsetzt. Danach führen ihre Wege auseinander und bleiben doch auf eigentümliche Weise miteinander verbunden.
