Summary

"Errand requiring immediate attention. Come."

The note was on vellum, pierced by the talons of the almost-crow that delivered it. Karou read the message. 'He never says please', she sighed, but she gathered up her things. When Brimstone called, she always came.

In general, Karou has managed to keep her two lives in balance. On the one hand, she's a 17-year-old art student in Prague; on the other, errand-girl to a monstrous creature who is the closest thing she has to family. Raised half in our world, half in 'Elsewhere', she has never understood Brimstone's dark work - buying teeth from hunters and murderers - nor how she came into his keeping. She is a secret even to herself, plagued by the sensation that she isn't whole.

Now the doors to Elsewhere are closing, and Karou must choose between the safety of her human life and the dangers of a war-ravaged world that may hold the answers she has always sought.

Great story let down by weird pronunciations

One of the best books I've ever read, (I I think this is my third time!) Highly recommended, just got to deal with some strange ways that the narrator pronounces things, but she still brings the characters to life.

it had so much potential!

I was really getting into the story despite the lazy allusions to xtian mythology, but then the fated two come together like the worst of the worst days of our drearies mills and boon teenage angst garbage and it just got worse. I slogged through until I got to the 3 hours and gave up. By that point there was past the point of no return.
Gods it was awful, whiny and pathetic once they got together. I won't be continuing with this series.
the narrator is passable, though her male voices are no different to her female ones (it was confusing and threw me out of the story quite a bit). I'm sure with several dozen more books behind her, she'll learn to flex her voice a bit more.
To the author, why did you ruin so much potential with romance? it is possible to write a great story that includes a love match without it bogging it all down with whiny angst.

A classic theme with a twist

I over all really liked the book, and there are some real original thoughts and takes on thing. Where I do struggle a bit is with the clichés. The perfect beauty of the two maine characters. A love so great it transcends death… etc. But over all good.

good premice and story, romace a bit weak

loved the characters and the story, the romance however felt very underdeveloped, even though it was a driving force in the story

What was that ending?! Are you kidding me?! UGHHHHH. That’s not okay!!!!

Side note: the narrator did a wonderful job with this job.

Cool concept, but overall not great

This book was recommended to me by a friend, and I really don't understand why...

The concept was very cool, but the world building was pretty clunky and mostly by way of info dump. Some problematic romance tropes (50 v 17 is icky even if the 50 year old is semi-immortal or whatever). All the human-looking characters are very white and very thin and very beautiful. Otherwise a mediocre teen adventure fantasy.

The concept was cool though.
