Nick Fairfax vows to do whatever Lord Bane Dunsaney desires for one year. In exchange, Nick's family gets a chance to regain their fortune. Is this the worst mistake of Nick's life, or will it lead to a love only found in fairy tales? Book 1 of our modern, M/M retelling of Beauty & The Beast.*
*Cursed: Broken is the first book of a 3-book series, which will all be published in 2016.*
Sensitive, aspiring photographer Nick Fairfax wants nothing to do with his family's corporate business, or their vicious, cold-blooded lifestyle. Intending to give up his inheritance and pursue his art, he arrives at his father's office, only to find that Fairfax Industries has fallen to a scarred man in a hooded cloak.
The man is the reclusive billionaire Lord Bane Dunsaney, and he is bent on destroying the Fairfaxes. But when he sees Nick, *everything* changes. Bane offers the Fairfaxes the chance to regain their fortune if Nick will reside at Moon Shadow, his secluded mansion, and do whatever the billionaire wants for a whole year. Nick has no real choice other than to agree to Bane's terms.
At Moon Shadow, Bane lords his power over Nick, going even so far as to take Nick's phone, computer and beloved camera away. The billionaire claims such measures are to protect his *privacy*, but Nick is convinced they are so Bane can control *him.*
Each is determined to see the worst in each other. But as time passes, Nick glimpses a Bane that is much more than the cold-hearted figure that he met in his father's office. He discovers that Bane is a man betrayed by love and no longer believes in it.
But what Nick comes to know about Bane is nothing compared to the man's true secret. Bane is *cursed.* He is a tiger-shifter who has *no control* over his beast. And that beast wants Nick.

"Warning... this is only half the book."
I really liked this story. It is well done. BUT, at this point (6/19/2016) only half the story is available. I AM SO FRUSTRATED. It isn't like a series of books with the same characters but one major story arc per book. This is literally, half a book. It is great but almost stops mid-sentence. Online, I found out the other half will be called Cursed:Bound but the author hasn't finished it yet. I wouldn't be so mad but I really like what is available so far. Why would an author publish half a story? It is dishonest and seems like a con job for the reader/listener.
"Warning! So freaking good but..."
This story is freaking fantastic. Like I wanna crawl crawl into it and listen to it again and again. If that makes any sense. However, it is ONLY HALF of the story. It does cut you off right at what seems like the best part. Ya, I admit it's not cool. It's also why this is such a short review. I had to wait a while to write this instead of right after listening because I was left a little raw from being severed from the plot. So no details really. But X. Aratare is a very talented story teller and as much as I enjoyed Raythe's (author's name) merman series this one will be world's better. Once it is complete.
So get the story and sit on it till the other half is done. If you listen, then know you've been warned. It really is a fascinating take on a tried and true favorite (beauty and the beast), with an addictive MxM twist. And I can't wait to see the ending once it's out! Seriously, it's no wonder Raythe's personal info is none existent. Lol, they'd have way too many crazy fans stalking them. Keep up the awesome work though X. because you need to tell us what happens NEXT!!!
"Initially confused; now I understand..."
The entire premise of this book was fantastic...indentured servitude, undeniable attraction met with a refusal to accept. I loved the adventure that the author was taking us on...but...the ending of this book sucked, with a big ole exclamation point! I wanted an happily ever after and I was left hanging. It was not until I reread the publisher summary that I realized that it was the first part of a three part series...that was a relief and now I am anxiously awaiting the next part of this series and will be better prepared when I finish part 2, knowing there is a part 3. Love the characters and I think that the narrator, Michael Pauley does an exceptional job!! Waiting patiently (mostly) for the next installment...
"Except for the cliffhanger - so good!"
In what is a familiar story to anyone whose read or watch Beauty and the Beast, Nick is “given” to Bane for a year of indentured servitude so that Nick’s family can regain a chance at their family fortune.
Bane hates Nick’s family for it’s greed and avarice and lumps Nick in with the bunch. Nick, on the other hand, is actually nothing like his family and is actually about to split with them due to these differences. But when faced with the option of helping them out he chooses family loyalty over his own self interest.
While in Bane’s care Nick finds himself slowly developing feelings for the cold but enthralling Bane. Bane, too, finds there is more to Nick than he’d thought.
This is the first book in a three part series. Knowing my own impatience, I wish I’d waited because we are left with a definite cliff hangar at the end.
This is a very slow burn romance between our two MCs and it’s done very well. It’s a great re-telling of an old fairy tale with a male/male twist.
While I definitely enjoyed this and was captivated the moment I started listening, I was a little disconcerted by the Nick/Tiger interactions… but I think it was tame enough for most people.
Audio: Michael Pauley does a great job with this. He gives it a very dark air and handles the various accents with ease. Highly recommend this as a way to enjoy this story.

"Great retelling of an old classic"
I loved the character development. That is basically the entire book and it was great to have a story instead of them ripping their clothing off every other page. I loved the whole thing. Bane's tortured past, the servant Omar, whom is more family than servant and Nick. Nick's corrupt family and so on. Unlike everyone else, I felt enough of the ends were tied up to satisfy me until the next story. It was open enough to have much more to explore between these two and we still have to get Bane to say those three little words.I think I have found myself a new author. This was my first book by her and I loved it.
Yes, I've listened to all of Michael's Michelle Howard books, but Michael, this is your best work out of the ones I've heard. Holly crap did you give Bane a sexy voice and Omar was also well done. Good job! I hope to see you do more varied voices in the future.
The moments about Bane and Alistair as well as Bane's father. I hope we get more nitty gritty details next book. I love a good tortured hero.
Really excited to have found this author and I will be buying more of her books on Audible.
"How do you solve a hundred year old Indian Curse?"
Excellent writer and narrator!
Even with similar plot, so many differences has me wondering what X. Aratare will do with all the characters next.
Please release Part Ii soon?
"where is the last chapter?"
you could play a fairly enjoyable drinking game while reading this book to the phrase 'Siberian blue eyes'. it was an enjoyable trip overall. my only major complaint is that it felt like the end of the book came one chapter early. like they just cut off the entire last chapter.. rude.
