In the third installment of R. L. Mathewson's Neighbor From Hell series, Rory and Connor are childhood nemeses who are thrown together as adults to work on a joint construction project. They still can't stand one another, but their outward animosity covers their mutually undeniable attraction, and it isn't long before their passion consumes them. Fran Jules is impressive in capturing the sizzling chemistry between Rory and Connor, including the various flashbacks where Jules uses perfect childish pitch. Checkmate hinges on this love/hate relationship, and Jules' enthusiastic performance makes it a hilarious and sexy romp.
There's nothing worse than living next door to your childhood nemesis, except maybe being forced to share your dream project with him, being blackmailed into going along with something that was just wrong on so many levels, and having your hot cocoa stolen by the person that drove you to drink it in the first place. As long as she has plenty of hot cocoa, a pair of pliers on hand and is able to resist Connor O'Neil's bad boy charm then Rory James should be able to make it through this project with her sanity intact. If not...
She'd probably face a few more nights in jail, have a few more restraining orders slapped against her and lose her heart to the man that ruined her life.

With enemies like this, well...
It couldn't have ended in any other way. The twists and turns in their relationship is enough to drive anyone nuts. But to go to hell and back for someone you love? I liked the stubborn pranks as well as the realisation of love.
Another fine addition to the NFH series.
A middle aged woman who hates running & uses audio books to drown out her mind screaming for mercy.
I am new to The Neighbours from Hell series on audio book. I really enjoyed the books & was really surprised at how well they transfer onto audio. I love this story because it is different. No girl meets boy & falls instantly in love. Nope ..this is girl meets boy & hates him. I like Connor as he has hidden depths. Rory is courageous but I am not a big fan of violence & she certainly does a fair amount of kicking. A fun story that I would recommend
" sweet, sexy, lighthearted, just plain funny!"
RL Mathewson gave us another wonderful adventure in the Neighbors from Hell series. Connor O'Neil and Rory James have been torturing each other since preschool. The teasing, pranks and antics did not end as they got older...oh no...both Connor and Rory just got more creative. Bigger and better! Twenty-five years later and their two rival construction companies are competing for the same job. As fate would have it, both companies land the job and they have to work together. I adored Rory & Conner, they were both sexy and hilarious. It was a never ending banter between this two who hated each other yet can't live without each other. I loved the chemistry, the humor, the silly escapades, the romantic side of Connor, Rory stubbornness, the smoking smexy times, and the addictive hot cocoa! And despite the craziness of the story, I did love that there was a touch of sweet heart warming backstory. Plus, I was so excited to find out that both Jason and Trevor (from the previous two books in this series) made appearances and they were still up to their food-grabbing antics. Just remember to not take this book seriously, just enjoy the ride!
I am looking forward to Audible releasing more books in Mathewson's A Neighbor from Hell series. These books are a must listen!!
Oooh, I think this is one of the best enemies to lovers story that I've ever read. Where the two previous books featured Bradfords and their insane obsession with food, this one featured a Bradford cousin and her insane obsession with getting one over on her mortal enemy, Connor.
These two hate one another...completely and totally. They've spent their lives making the other person's life pure hell. Throughout the story are little snippets of how/why Connor and Rory have gotten jailed, banned, and driven out of places was so funny. I can't imagine how long the author spent thinking up all those crazy scenarios. The book is worth reading for just the length and breadth of hearing about the antics between these two. This story takes the story of the little four year old boy pulling the cute girls pigtails to an extreme.
But they both work construction and in this book they are put to work together on the biggest project either one of them has ever had to work. It will make their careers, but they have to work together and cooperate to make it come together. Most of the town would bet on this being an impossible task. In fact, most of the town will not even let them attend events at the same time because of the destruction they leave in their wake when that happens. I loved the set-up.
And then the story began and I fell completely and totally in love with Connor. Because he is that sweet little four year old. He's always just liked Rory...a lot. He's also done all these incredible sweet things over the years to protect and shield Rory. He wants to take care of her. And Rory has never had that. She grew up in a family of five men...her four brothers and their father. They had NO IDEA what to do with her, so out of self-preservation, she became prickly and hard. Connor is the ONLY person ever in her life who sees her as a girl...and it drives her nuts.
I LOVED this book...so so much! It was just fabulous. So much emotion and the narrator once again NAILED the story and characters to perfection. I highly recommend it!
I love this series. As soon as I finished this one, I immediately got online and bought the next three. If they are near as good as the previous three, I'm going to get a lot of housework done this week (I listen to audiobooks while I do my household chores, so if I'm listening to a good one, I just keep working.)
"Love amongst the sociopaths"
I'm going to be charitable and assume this was a first novel. I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them. All of her characters, most notably the men, have what could charitably be called an impulse control problem. In this particular novel, however, the main characters are criminally insane. Both commit assaults on each other and ancillary characters with nonchalance and zeal usually reserved for Batman villains. All of this is played for laughs, but the behavior is so over the top that you dislike the characters and start hoping for incarceration rather than romance. As I said, I've read other books by the author and enjoyed them immensely. This one was just off-putting.
"This Chex Mix is stale...."
Rory and Connor have been enemies since childhood and according to Connor nobody can torment her but him. They both are nominated for a job at Strawberry Manor and if it gets done in time they both will benefit from it. Rory and Connor both torment each other throughout the time it takes so that only one of them can get the credit for a job well done. But, when Rory falls in the basement, Connor takes it upon himself to take care of her. He then comes up with a new plan of redeeming himself in the eyes of the public by telling Rory that she can have whatever she wants but, she will have to be his girlfriend and make everyone think they are in love. Will they continue with the games or will they give in to each other? Another hilarious tell of will they/won't they. Fran, you did great this time. I enjoyed listening to this one. Jason and Trevor make an appearance in this story and so does a few more characters from other NFH books. I can't wait for the next one.
"Clever humor and romance that touches hearts"
I love her books full of clever humor and romance that touches hearts. Fran Jewels is perrrrrfect
Not only is the story really good but Fran Jules was an amazing narrator. I would look for anything she does. She was great.
""Push me and you might just find yourself ...""
“Connor; "Push me and you might just find yourself locked in the trunk of a car and on a ferry headed off to Nova Scotia. . .Again" he said Softly loving the way she practically shook with rage against him.
"I knew that was you, you bastard" She snarled, looking torn between going for his nipples again or just out right killing him.
"You deserved it", he felt obligated to remind her.
She scoffed. "I was twelve!"
"you super glued my shorts to my ass!"
the smile that teased her lips transformed her face from beautiful to breathtakingly beautiful in a matter of seconds. . .
She chuckled softly as she moved to put a little space between them. "I actually forgot about that".”
Good story. Not as good as book 1 and 2, but this has been a consistently great series. childhood enemies are now adult enemies with lots of antics to release the sexual tension between the 2.
"Not as good as the others"
I liked the other books in this series, but I really didn't get into this one. Maybe it was the bullying or maybe the constant bickering. It just wore me out.
This book is great. I love this collection of books. And cannot wait to get to the next.
"I LOVED THIS SERIES"
I loved this book. So funny and hot. That's hard for a writer to be both in one book. If you have enjoyed any of my 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 then you will love this one too.
