Kate Sedgwick's life has been anything but typical. She's endured hardship and tragedy, but throughout it all she remains happy and optimistic (there's a reason her best friend, Gus, calls her Bright Side). Kate is strong willed, funny, smart, and musically gifted. She's also never believed in love. So when Kate leaves San Diego to attend college in the small town of Grant, Minnesota, the last thing she expects is to fall in love with Keller Banks.
They both feel it. But each has a reason to fight it. Each has a secret. And when secrets are revealed, some will heal you... and some will end you.

Book lover, dog lover, life lover! :)
yes, definitely. this is now one of my favourite books/series that I've listened to.
plot of the book resembles to The fault in our Stars. Both books beautiful in their own way.
i enjoyed conversation Bright Side would have with Gus. it always made me laugh.
yes. i was hooked
its one of the most beautiful books that teach you to live your life to the fullest and enjoy every moment. loved it!
I loved this book, it was gruelling and touched on many topics that are often avoided. I laughed and cried (sobbed) from about 65% through to the end. It was still a lovely ending all told.
Narration was mainly good. the British 'Mancunian' accent was truely atrocious, and I did struggle with Lydia Dornay's narration style, every sentence seemed to be posed as a question, this became irritating and did detract from the story line or rather my ability to relate to the female character. That was the only negative from my perspective.
You simply must listen to this story - get the hankies ready I'm not normally a crier and it got to me...
SPOILERS: This is a beautiful story and was very well written. The characters were interesting and the narrators did a great job. The story seemed true to life and very believable. Only problem was that it was the saddest story I think I have read in a long time, if ever. I don't think I have ever cried this much over a book and felt this empty after I finished. Totally worth it if you don't mind the heartbreak. I prefer HEAs so I wish I knew what I was getting into because it will be awhile before I get past the sad. Just too sad for my taste. I gave it five stars because everything was great as far as the story and narration goes. It just wasn't what I like to read. Totally depressed with red puffy eyes now.
"I know my rating will get hate mail"
I chose this book based on ratings alone. And although the story and writing were solid... I can't get down for a book with such a sad ending. Sorry people... I wish I would have been told before I started listening. I needed some little ray of light at the end of the tunnel to make this a good read for me.
"Wonderful story, but..."
A brilliant novel that requires a whole lot of tissue. I'm giving this 5 stars because I loved it. But I have such a hard time with the language - the f-bomb is not in everyone's every day vocabulary in real life and although I'm not against it being used here or there as needed, the frequency in this novel was a real negative for me. It seemed to replace the word "very" or "really" way too often. Just my opinion - please don't judge me for saying so. Clearly by my rating, I did not judge the book/author for it. This is just a heads up for others who might feel the same about that word.
Narration was wonderful!
I'm terrible at writing reviews. I'm a reader not a writer. With that being said I feel like this book deserves praise, lot's of it. Bright Side kept popping up on Goodreads as a suggestion and I was super excited when it released on audible. By chapter 7, I stopped and purchased it on ebook and sent it to a friend. This book needs to be shared. I'll simply say to you, what I said to her. I love the heroine. She's amazing and I want you to know her also. The writing style is a little different, but don't stop reading. Because it's a truly EPIC story.
Yeah a lot of people have horrible lives and go through far more than what Kate did. I feel that writing such a sad story is emotional blackmail and readers/listeners are compelled to love and get emotionally attached. It just so unfair to people's hearts'. Maybe I didn't get the message?
Be ready to ugly cry!
"Wrecked!!! That is all!!!"
Where to begin......
I have so many emotions going on right now I don't even know how to write this review. I had no idea going into this book what it was going to be about so I didn't have a chance to brace for it. I am not a person who cries over books or movies but I cried like a big baby. It took me 1/2 the day just to read the end because I kept having to take breaks and almost just stopped listening all together. This book broke my heart! That is the only thing I can say about how I feel.
The story was amazing, so fun & sweet and real. The writing was perfect and the narration couldn't have been better! The only question I had throughout this book is why didn't he even ask her to try? I needed her to at least try.
If you like a book that will wreck you, read this book. If you like a book to completely devour you and leave you in a million pieces, with no idea how to move on from it, listen to this book because listening to Katie tell me her story was so much more, for me at least.
Now everyone is telling me that after Bright Side broke my heart, Gus will mend it....I REALLY hope that is true but it might take a miracle.
I've never heard of these narrators but they were SPOT ON PERFECT for this story!!!
"HEART BREAKING BRILLIANCE!"
My goodness this book was amazing. One that you truly need to have your Mindy body and soul ready to be ripped to shreds but this brilliant book means so much to the human life. I absolutely LOVED this read. A must read/listen from me! Wonderful writing and this story just hits home for us all.
"So Many Tears"
Ok, so I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book. Part of me wants to say it's brilliant. The other part is irritated.
You know early on in the book that Kate hiding something, and it's bad. You then conclude this is not the kind of book destined to end well and start prepping for an ugly cry. What I wasn't prepared for was the last 40% of the book being nothing but a marathon of tears. I like a book that makes me feel things strongly enough to cry. I don't mind being put through those paces, but this was challenging even for me. It was drawn out and takes you through every detail. Part of me thinks it's beautiful. The other part of me thinks it's too much. The last 40% of the book could have been cut in half and wouldn't have lost any of it's emotional impact. It got to a point where I just couldn't wait for it to be over. It was indulgent and torturous.
I loved the lessons in this book—so poignant and beautiful. I suggest you read it. But be warned, it's not an easy read.
"Bright Side! An Awesome Read by Kim Holden"
Yes! I loved this book, as a matter of fact, I read the book first and today I listened to the audio book and it made it so much more!
I liked the fact that the story is about true love, between a boy and a girl for 20 years while they were growing up together, and the love Bright Side, the main character, had for her sister who was a year older, who she took care of her whole life, as her sister had Down Syndrome. Even though Bright Side was dealt a bad hand in parents, she took care of her sister willingly and with so much love it was truly touching and heartbreaking all at the same time.Bright side finally gets to go to college when it is just her, and she finally meets someone she falls in love with. But her true love was the boy she grew up with-Gus, and his mom treated Brightside and her sister as her children.
No, but I plan to!
Yes, I listened to it all in one sitting. Once you start reading or listening in this case, to the book, it instantly draws you in.
This book was truly an exceptional book, and I will listen to it again every now and then. This book will make you laugh, make you cry, feel true love with the characters, love between two siblings, between neighbrs, between best friends for life and then finally between a man and a woman.
"An Emotional Ride"
The MC was nothing short of lovable and the relationships were believable. I got very invested in the character even though it was very clear from the beginning that this book was not going to have a happy ending. Oh, and the narration was fantastic!
I didn't score this book higher for a couple of reasons. First, the foreshadowing was very transparent. Second, the author kind of threw everything at you (all the history and sad stuff) within a very short time span. I think it would have been more effective I'd we slowly got the history as the plot developed. Lastly, I thought there were too many parallels to The Fault of Our Stars. I get it; they're of the same genre, but I felt as though there were more similarities than there should have been. just my opinion.
