Danger, warning! Do not listen to this audiobook whilst driving as giggling leads to erratic driving and swerving all over the road and you do not want to become another blot on the landscape do you?
If you read the book, you'll love this. If you remember the television series with Geraldine James, George Cole, Julia McKenzie and David Suchet himself, you'll love this. David Suchet brings everyone completely to life, and his Mrs Forthby's "yes, yes" should rate some sort of audio-reader Oscar in itself. Wonderfully funny story, brilliantly read, and perfect from start to finish.
Bring on more Tom Sharpe.
This is a brilliant story well read by Suchet.
If you like a good, well laid out story with a dose of retribution thrown in, this is for you.
I love Tom Sharpe and came to this having read Porterhouse Blue. Blott On The Landscape features the same quirky style, but gets a little bogged down. This kind of humour requires careful handling and a light touch that is sometimes lacking.
David Suchet's performance is astonishingly good, and it is a shame there is not a six star category.
If you like Sharpe then this will be an enjoyable listen, particularly given the performance. If you have never come across his eccentric style of plot development then Porterhouse Blue would be a better entry into his madcap world.
As stated in the headline- English humor at its best, or the way we all imagine the English humor should be. Good entertaining story, which never loses ones attention. David Suchet's performance is splendid, great role play which easily and vividly builds the picture before one's eyes. Listening already for the second time.
Better, no. Different and worth getting yes - excellent choice in David Suchet and will be looking for more Tom Sharpe for my collection
Excellent all round. Clear, easy to hear, the right tone and mood to match the story and characterisation. Can't recommend enough.
Read this book years ago - downloaded the audio because I was curious to see if it was as good as I remembered.
No - it's better. It's classic Tom Sharpe funny but David Suchet makes it so much more. He sounds like he's sitting with you, regaling you with the tale, rather than reading lines from a book. Clear diction, consistent character voices and name pronunciation, very easy on the ear.
Word of warning though - you may find yourself completely losing track of time listening to this one.
"Sharpe at his best..."
I can't stress enough, just how good Mr. Sharpe's writing is. It's classic Sharpe, can't hold back the laughter. He's wonderful, what a great read.
Sharpe has given us a hysterically funny romp through British politics and marital problems among the country gentry. I chortled the whole way through. Be advised: there are mature themes (sexuality, in particular), and the liberal dropping of the F-bomb by one character in particular.
I must say that David Suchet truly brought all the eccentric, stereotypic British "country house set" characters to life brilliantly. I've been looking at the other Sharpe books, but none of them are narrated by Suchet, so I can't decide if I want to get them, as well.
The story is hilariously farcical. David Suchet is simply perfect for this book. HIs narration added so much to my enjoyment.
"Excellent reading of a very funny book."
Suchet's realisation of the characters of Sharpe's wittily satirical novel is masterful. His Lady Maude is perfect.
"Suchet is excellent!"
Despite the fact that some of the humor is crass, I ended up laughing out loud many times during this audiobook.
"Love the story"
Great performance by mr suchet
Funny!! love lady maud and blot
The characters were classic reminds me of living in shropshire
"So unrelentingly funny and creative"
Tom Sharpe's masterpiece and one of the top ten all time funny novels. The narrator is great too.
