A forbidden romance about pain that binds us together...
Five years ago we lived in the same house. He was the ultimate bad boy.
And my foster brother.
Now he's back. Tougher, harder, meaner. All of it aimed at me, because I was the one who sent him away. It's payback time. He wants his pound of flesh, and I am helpless to say no.
Better When It Hurts is a full-length dark romance novel that does stand alone. Fair warning: Blue is a cruel bastard and a dirty talker!

I loved the joining of the two main characters. They had a history and they overcome it.
A great read. I can't wait to get another Skye Warren book
I gave this 5 stars because it was a great story with great sex
"Smooth story to listen but ended rather quickly"
Blue was one hard twisted mf and Hannah was the epitome of anti heroine but this dark love story was definitely worth listening. I was suprised when I realized the story was coming to an end. It felt a bit rushed but then prolonging the story would have made it more boring. Maybe author writes too many books a year and could improve quality by putting more time for them. If couple has big misunderstandings in the past and years of resentment between them you dont expect these problems to be solved over a night. Given how complex the beginning of the story was I just expected more complexity from the end.
"A good story....I loved Blue and Lola."
This is my first audiobook, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I would have liked the male to have been voiced by a male. I did like the story.
I loved the way Blue was so protective of Lola even though he wanted to punish her for what happened in the past.
I liked the way she changed voices, but I still would have enjoyed a male voice for Blue.
I used a Kindle Fire and had to turn the volume up all the way to hear it and even then it was hard to hear in the car. Maybe there is a way to use the car speakers, but I don't know.
Yes I would try another book from this author, but I'm unsure about Veronica Fox.
If you like dark romances then I might recommend this book but only for that reason
I could tell the difference between most of the major characters, but sometimes it was a little difficult.
"Rough Love Story / interesting narration"
Depends on the friend. This is definitely not for the faint of heart. It is a rough, harsh love story that is not easy to take in but has a lot of heart.
The story is wrapped in a cruel package and bleak surroundings but is ultimately about forgiveness of oneself and of others. It is about finding out about your self worth even when everything seems bleak. Lola, the main character, had such a hard life and yet she maintained some humanity. To see her growth and change in this book was compelling. Also Blue, the hero of the story, was quite enigmatic and his motives took some time to decipher. He was a character that I always wanted to find out more about. I found the overall story gripping.
The narration performance by Veronica Fox was interesting. There were times when she is narrating Lola's inner thoughts that sounded very flat to me and it was a bit off putting in the beginning. However, as I reflected about this I wondered if this was a conscience choice due to the fact that the character Lola was dulled emotionally due to all the cruelty she had suffered her whole life. Because Ms. Fox's narration of the actual dialogue of the characters was great. I think she gave distinct tones to the various female characters. She also did male character voices very well. Her interpretation of Blue was a big selling point of why I liked her narration. When speaking the dialogue of the characters, she narrated with emotion and nuance that added greatly to the overall story.
Yes, but I took breaks. There is a lot of emotion and harsh situations going on in this book so it was nice to have time to digest the story.
Second Skye Warren novel I have read. First one I have heard. Ms. Veronica Fox does an awesome job with the reading of the book.
Loved the book and its story.
"Loved this story"
I wouldn't listen to this story again because I wasn't crazy about the narrators voice. It was monotone for the first few chapters and I wasn't sure I was going to be able to listen to her for the length of the story. It's a good thing the story was interesting because by the 6th chapter I was so into the story the narrator was only mildly irritating and I was hooked on the story. I would read this story again because it was great. Sometimes the book would go to the past and I'd be lost for a few minutes trying to figure out what happened, but that's to be expected since you're not reading you're listening.
The unusual characters and story line.
Her voice was so even there wasn't a lot of inflection in the beginning and it was hard to listen to.
When he figured out why she let him go the first time...I was happy it finally happened.
this was my first audible book. I have read several books by this author and love her stories. I am not a audible book person. I need to read the story myself. I didn't care for the narrator. she was bland and the way she cursed was strange. the story went from future to past and it was hard to follow story when it happened. regardless this was a good story and I look forward to reading this story for myself.
I very much enjoyed this dark romance from Skye Warren. I read it previously in ebook and was excited to listen to the audio book. While I still loved the story just as much in this format (it is a wonderful dark and compelling second chance at love read), I wish the narrator was more emotive. Some sections were especially monotone which took aware a bit from my enjoyment.
"so wrong and so right all at once"
Once I picked this book up I couldn’t put it down until it was finished. Lola and Blue’s love was so wrong and so right all at once. The sex was forced yet wanted. They were each afraid to love the other. Wow, there were so many emotions contradicting each other. I would read this one again.
The audio was good. It took me a chapter or two to get use to her voice and then it just clicked and worked well for me. She used different voices for the different characters and stayed true to each voice. Well done.
"Dark second chance romance"
Lola is a stripper trying to make ends meet, care for someone she loves, and keep her head down and out of trouble.
Blue is head of security at the strip club who holds a grudge against Lola but can't seem to fight his attraction to her
"I will meet his eyes, those dark pools of lust and resentment, like windows to the past.
“And if I say no?”
The windows frost over. “That’s not an option.”'
Better When it Hurts is book 2 in the Stripped series but can be read as a standalone. I've listened to all of the audiobooks in this series and I enjoyed this one more than the others. The books in this series are all really good stories of finding the way out of a very dark place into the light of a promising future.
"He guides me away, out of the dark, into the golden afternoon light. I’m blinded by it, but I don’t slow down. I know he can see, and I’m content to let him lead."
