Publisher's Summary

You want to know what the worst thing is? It's not the embarrassment, or the looks on people's faces when I tell them what happened. It isn't the pain of him not being there - loneliness is manageable.

The worst thing is not knowing why.

When Justin walks out on Alice on their honeymoon, with no explanation apart from a cryptic note, Alice is left alone and bewildered, her life in pieces.

Then she meets Evelyn, a visitor to the gallery where she works. It's a seemingly chance encounter, but Alice gradually learns that Evelyn has motives, and a heartbreaking story, of her own. And that story has haunting parallels with Alice's life.

As Alice delves into the mystery of why Justin left her, the questions are obvious. But the answers may lie in the most unlikely of places...

"I kept thinking 'what the heck???'"

For better or worse, After You Left will keep you on your toes. Is it a mystery? Well, yeah- but not the one you think it is. Is it literary? Maybe; some aspects of the book are quite fine while others are straight out of the chicklit handbook. Is it engaging? Yes- except when it isn't. And last, 'What did she say?' Narrator Knoweldon does an excellent job but in that whispery-childwoman voice that keeps me rewinding.

Yep, I am ambivalent about After You Left. The story line seemed forced at times but the storytelling was excellent. I'll certainly try more Carol Mason novels because despite everything I've said, After You Left is better than 2/3 of the books I listen to.

    Story
"I wanted to like this book but couldn't"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Maybe someone with a lot of patience, who doesn't look for the narrator to match the character's voice.

Would you ever listen to anything by Carol Mason again?

If she better fit a character, yes.

    Any additional comments?

The story's premise was good and well-intended, but the narrator was quite distracting. She couldn't emote well enough.

    Story
"Just good enough to not fall asleep on."

This book has good bones. There's lots of good twist but the characters are boring and the story ends up being anti-climatic. One of the biggest problems was none of the characters had any fight. It's a book I want drama. I was extremely disappointed that I actually lost sleep listening to the last chapter. It just totally killed the whole book for me. I was looking for more closure from the Alice and Justin story but instead it was just a redundant telling of the E&E storyline.

Very dry and boring. Very little emotion. Things that don't matter to the story. Rambling

    "Nope"

Why couldn't they end the story? They just left it all unfinished. Too long of a book to end without wrapping up any of the stories.

    Story
    "Go tell Alice"

Okay I'm going to give up on these British writers. Clarified writers that are broken hearted romances. These women seem to believe that stand by your man even after being cheated on and dumped.
Your husband run out on you during you honeymoon leaving you 5000 miles alone and you want him back?
He don't call or text except 2 other times when she contacts him, but have no answers for why! After two weeks he comes back to pick up his clothes spins some story about a 3 mo. old sick son by former girlfriend he was not aware of until day before Alice and his wedding. So the son has an heredity illness that he now feels obligated to raise his son with former girlfriend .
So I say F- him. This man ran with no consideration for her or his commitment to her. She did nothing wrong so she did not deserve his treatment. I guess at 59 I'm a realist so I say "love don't love nobody"
British writers stop making women door mats, put on big girl panties and move on. Justin I call bull.

    "Not terrific and not dreadful"

Found the beginning a bit confusing. some of the quotes of the patients from the nursing home were insightful and interesting. The parallels of the stories didn't seem to fit to me?
