I really enjoyed this book as I do all Debbie Macomber titles. However, I was almost unable to get past the first chapter because of the narration. Partly it was the tinny recording that was to blame, but Ms Garver's attempts at giving each character their own voice ranged from a really aggravating Betty Boop for Goodness to a perpetually slurring Chet with a hair lip. It was only my love of Debbie Macombers stories and my excitement at starting a new series (not to mention one that takes place at Christmas - my favorite time of year) that had me persisting through to the end.
Doubly frustrating was that when the reader narrated any other parts of the story that weren't spoken words of the characters, except for a few spots where she stumbled over a word or two she had quite a pleasant voice. Perhaps this was one of her initial efforts in recording an audio book so I won't write her off just yet but I'll be a little nervous about purchasing any other audio books with her as narrator.
"A so-so read"
I think this narrator may have read a few others of these angel books and she is not too bad. She has a few tendencies I don't necessarily like, but it may just be me, so I won't be specific lest it draw your attention to something you otherwise wouldn't mind. My real issue is just that it felt awkward listening to a story with an "almost" sex scene in a story about angels. I know it sounds prudish, but the tone just didn't work for me to have the two together. This is the first time in any of the angel stories that it stood out to me. If that doesn't bother you, then you may like the book. There didnt seem to be a lot of Angel intervention similar to other books, but I don't know if this was abridged or one of the older books in the series. It is worth a try if you just want a light read. Macomber is a wonderful author regardless.
"Audio does not match the book!!"
Unfortunately, I can not listen and read along like I usually do. The audio DOES NOT MATCH THE BOOK!! Sentences and multiple paragraphs are skipped that are in the Kindle book. I find this very annoying and wish I could get a refund for the audio. I have stopped listening at Chapter 2.
"Good story, really poor narration"
This is my least favorite in the Angels series. I'm glad it wasn't my first of the series, or I wouldn't have continued with it.
Any of the other narrators of Debbie Macomber's novels, notably Sandra Burr, Renee Raudman or Kimberly Farr
Even after listening to and reading many of Debbie Macomber's books, the narration on this one had me struggling to get past the first chapter. The narrator's attempts at different voices was annoying. This is definitely a book to read in print. I'd love to see it re-recorded with a different narrator.
"Good Story but..."
I was very disappointed that there was such graphic sexual details in this book. I had listed to her later angelic intervention books which were "clean" and enjoyable.
It is a good thing I did not start with this book or I would never had enjoyed her other books in this series that were clean and wholesome.
"Great story, poor narration."
I loved Leah's storyline the most.
Other stories by this author.
This is my problem with the narration- one of the angels talked like Betty Boop. Chet sounded like he was talking through his teeth the whole time and sounded quite gross. It was so hard to get through parts of this book because of the voices.
