Summary

Sophie Apperly has spent her whole life pleasing others - but when she realises her family see her less as indispensable treasure and more as general dogsbody, she decides she's had enough. So when an old friend offers her the chance of a lifetime, she decides to swap Little England for the Big Apple, and heads off to the land of opportunity.

From the moment Sophie hits the bright lights of Manhattan she's determined to enjoy every minute of her big adventure. And when fate throws her together with Matilda, a spirited grande dame of New York society who invites her to Connecticut for Thanksgiving, she willingly accepts.

English-born Matilda is delighted with her new friend - though her grandson Luke, undeniably attractive but infuriatingly arrogant, is anything but welcoming. When Luke arrives in England a few weeks later, Sophie hardly expects him to seek her out. But Matilda has hatched some complicated plans of her own - and so Luke has a proposal to make....

Very enjoyable

Enjoyed this a lot. The storyline wasn't entirely original but the characters were well written and took me along for he ride

I wish this was a better story. Disappointing.

Would you try another book written by Katie Fforde or narrated by Jilly Bond?

Jilly Bond's narration sounds like an old fashioned little girl. I found it really hard to like any of the characters when they spoke in a silly high pitched voice. I am afraid the American accents were dire, and at one point Luke turned from a dubious American to a fully fledged Cornishman. Sorry Jilly, but I can't put myself through listening to another book narrated by you...
Katie Fforde has also let me down and I could cry! She has been one of my favourite authors for a long time but this book was terrible. I didn't identify with the stuffy and old fashioned characters, Sophie would have better placed in a Jane Austin novel rather than present day England / America, and why does she like Luke? It's beyond me.

Has A Perfect Proposal put you off other books in this genre?

No, it is after all churned out chick lit and a certain amount of predictability is par for the course.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jilly Bond’s performances?

No, sorry.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I'm struggling to think of any. I'm afraid Luke reminded me a little of Christian Gray from a certain well known trilogy (which is absolutely not a good thing!) but terribly one dimensional and boring.

Any additional comments?

Writing this review is done with a heavy heart as I usually love Katie Fforde books. This one has let her down I feel. Sorry Katie.

Voices

I mainly enjoyed the narration however Luke's voice is sometimes a bit annoying/ inconsistent. If you've enjoyed other Katie Fforde stories this is one for you.

wonderful switch off

What did you like most about A Perfect Proposal?

I'm just out of hospital after major surgery and not able to do anything...this Perfect Proposal was frothy enough, almost believable enough, with great characters to allow me to switch off from pain and feeling sorry for myself, wasn't taxing and most importantly was entertaining...

Who was your favorite character and why?

Great Uncle Eric!

What about Jilly Bond’s performance did you like?

Her pace was good and her Uncle Eric & Cornish Monica characters were good fun

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Cornwall meets Connecticut

Definitely a Treat!

Sophie the main character is immensely likeable, capable and young. There is also a very endearing great uncle called Eric, I thought Jilly Bond was particularly good at doing his voice. Although it is generally well narrated, it is especially good on all the accents too. A Perfect proposal is a rocky road to love and certainly up to Katie Fforde's usual high standards. And although not quite as' perfect' as the title would suggest, this one is definitely a treat!

off putting narration

I have found the narrator's character voices awful, especially Luke. it has ruined a reasonable story. Luke's accent is so strange and keeps changing. Will not be able to listen to anymore of this author if it is the same narrator.

Most irritating lead character ever

Gosh Sophie has never heard of empowerment or girl power. Neither has she heard of ageism given the way she talks of those older than her.

Narration is possibly the most irritating thing ever. Simpering and girly giggling does nothing to help Sophie appear empowered.
