In a matter of seconds, my entire world changed, and it was in that moment that I stopped living and simply began to exist.
In my grief, I sent a letter to the first boy I ever loved. I hoped in writing it I'd find some peace from the nightmare I was living, some solace in my anger.
I didn't expect him to write back. I wasn't prepared for his words, and I certainly wasn't ready for the impact this soldier would have on my life. A deep-rooted hate transformed into friendship, and then molded into a love like I'd never known before.
Sergeant Devin Ulysses Clay did what I couldn't: He put the shattered pieces of my heart back together, restoring my faith in humanity and teaching me how to live again.
But now that I'm whole, I have a decision to make: Do I return to my life as I knew it and the fiancé I left behind, or do I walk away from it all for the only man to ever break my heart?

"Good but not fabulous"
This is a sweet love story, but Katie almost killed me in the beginning. whining, crying, pleading, spazing out and totally clueless about the Wyatt issue. I kept listening and Katie earns her Woman Card after all. Devinn is a dream come true. Good listen if you enjoy happily ever after.
"THE ENDURANCE OF TRUE LOVE.. & THE PRICE OF WAR"
Their connection began on the first day of First Grade... it didn't start off well - Devin stole Katie's Barbie pencil then, by the second day, they were tossing each other to the ground and, by the age of 15 Katie knew she loved Devin completely. The Prologue starts as the two lovers declare their love for each other at the tender age of 16 and let their passions take over... making the physical connection between them as real as their soul connection. However, the promises given, the tender words spoken and the sweet dreams talked about were shattered because by the next day Devin was gone. And it would be 10 long years before these two soul-mates would see each other again.
Their love story is a difficult one to listen to because at times you're just so sad about certain events that played out in their pasts that kept them apart, then your euphoric when, against all the odds, they find each other again and reconnect, forgive and fall in love all over again. But you can't breathe easy because by this time Devin is a soldier and is deployed fighting in Iraq and, by the many brutal, tense and descriptive scenes, you know that a HEA is not necessarily guaranteed here. So your heart is either in your mouth as you try to hold back tears over what their lives could have been... or your heart's soaring at the rightness of these two lovers finding their way back to each other. However, the sucker-punch that these Authors so skilfully and cruelly weave into the storyline had me shattered, shocked and left me devastated praying for miracles.
No matter what your feeling are on War - this story has brought home the tragedy, the courage, the heartbreak, the loss, the heroism and the mental and physical toll that War inflicts on people. And I'd like to take this opportunity of personally thanking each and every member of the Armed Forces... and their families, friends and loved ones too for what they have all selflessly endured.
Worth a credit? Yes, this is an emotional second chance love story that was sweet, romantic, heartfelt, tender and with a few sexy times between two soul mates who, for a while, lost each other then miraculously found each other again against all the odds - but it was during the traumatic, dangerous and devastating backdrop of War. Dual POV's and the narrators were great at bringing heartbeats, emotions and setting the mood for each and every Chapter.
"3.5 Stars I Should Have Known!"
I hate stories about love triangles so I should have steered clear. I am also not a fan of endless internal dialogue. But all the rave reviews convinced me!
I'm going to be the odd listener out here......
Okay before I get into why I didn't like this book lets start with what I did like....
The Author has the ability to pull out someones emotions.
I have relatives in the military and I like how accurate her military reference were...
Lastly, I liked how she showed the ugly of the military and not just the sexed up version...
Okay the reason I couldn't finish this book.....
The book starts out with a flashback of a young Devin and Katie who are best friends who are in love. He has to leave because of his mother....
10 years later Katie wakes up from a car accident
she is now with Wyatt... .7 years
Katie is depressed and angry....
Katie's shrink thinks she should get a pen pal in the Military.
Guess who she finds on the list? Devin
Okay this is where I should have stopped the book because I knew where this was going.
After writing the letter to Dev, she comes to the realization that she has never loved Wyatt, or she wasn't in love with him now....
She decides to break it off with Wyatt.......
The way Katie did it was just wrong..... She didn't even try to fix her 7 year relationship
The book will go on and on how Devin has nothing to with her break up with Wyatt
What put the icing on the cake is when she asked Devin *with an edge to her voice* he has loved anyone....
Really you were in love with WYATT!
I didn't finish the book. I just couldn't. DNF 80%
I gave the book 3.5 stars because the writing is good it is just not the type of story that I like.
Erin Mallon , Max Bellmore were good with the delivery of the story
"5 Lover Stars"
I am an audio nut I admit it. So when I watched a clip of one of the authors read a bit of this book I got intrigued. No not because of what he read but the feel of the book. And to find out I could get the audio… BOUGHT. ;)
Heck I am glad I did what a story of love and faith. Now that might seem weird given the nature of the story and how it all unfolded but I looked a little deeper.
You have a couple who are torn apart because of circumstance, only to be brought back together because of circumstance. A fluke? Or fate? Which I personally believe. I love a good second chance romance.
The struggle Katie goes through, it’s an emotional roller coaster to listen to/read. You can’t help but want to comfort the girl. But what I loved was that even in her pit of despair and anger she fought her way out of it, and didn’t even know she was doing it. She didn’t want to be that person she was turning into. Her best friend is pretty awesome too.
Sergeant Devin, well I won’t tell you what I thought of him in the beginning of the book… But he was a kid I get it. So I gave him a second chance and wow, he became one heck of a character. I don’t think he will leave my brain for a long time to come. His strength and struggles is admirable. You really get in his head and feel what he is feeling. You see his love shining in almost everything he did or wrote to Katie.
His inner self was totally a softy, but his outer shell had to be this tough hard guy well because of his job and to protect him from his past. But the love of a good woman can melt even the hardest of shells to get to the soft gooey goodness inside.
The narration both of them were outstanding, especially in the emotional parts you feel what the characters were going through. Heck I cried, yes I did, and it’s a testament to the authors and the narration to bring that out in an audiobook. Because not all narrators can portray that kind of emotion and make us the readers feel it.
I hope to see more of these authors in audio I will be one of the first ones in line to buy.

"A Lover's Lament"
A Lover's Lament is an absolutely beautiful, touching story. Written by a soldier about a soldier. Katie and Devin had a really long painful road to go to get to their happy ending. Devin was abandoned by his father at a young age and raised by an abusive mother. He and Katie have been friends since elementary school and fell in love with each other along the way. Devin's mother moves them to PA when he is still a teenager. Due to some well meaning advice by Katie's father, Devin thinks Katie is better off without him and moves with no way for Katie to contact him. 10 years later, Katie and her father are in a car accident and her father doesn't make it. Her world is turned upside down and she doesn't handle it well. The man that caused the car accident was a soldier. He was driving drunk. Katie's therapist thinks reaching out to another soldier may help her understand what was going on inside the soldiers mind. She is given a list of names of soldiers she can write to as a pen pal. Devin is one of the soldiers on that list. They start writing to each other and become friends again. She make a lot of progress in coping with the accident and the loss of her father. Devin and Katie fall back in love. Neither of them had really fallen out of love. This book is the journey of her finding peace from the loss of her father and Devin walking away from her 10 years ago. They get their HEA.
The narration was pretty good.
I love this story. The audible version is really dood. The narrators did a fantastic job. They both made a great story even better. This is a must have.
"Heart wrenching, emotional, second chance love"
I have had this to read on my kindle for quite a while so when I was deciding on my next audio book read I decided to read this and holy shite, it was such a fabulous read!
Firstly, this is a second chance love story, not just your run of mill second chance love though. It was filled with so much, emotion, passion and feeling. I. Felt. Everything. There were moments when I wanted to scream and there was also a torrent of tears. I freaking love it when a book has that affect on me!
Anyhoo, let me talk about the story ☺ Katie and Devin are high school sweethearts, not just puppy love either, the truly love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together. This all comes to a screeching halt when Devin tells Katie he is leaving town to live over a thousand miles away with his mother. He pretty much disappears overnight, leaving Katie confused and distraught.
Ten years later, Katie is struggling to deal with the death of someone close to her and her therapist suggests she becomes penpals with one of the many soldiers serving overseas in Iraq. Although reluctant at first, Katie is shocked to see Devin’s name on the list. Is this a sign? Maybe it’s fate? Perhaps it is a chance to find out what happened all those years ago and finally get closure on that part of her life.
Katie always hoped that Devin would come back to her one day and when he didn’t she moved on with her life, went to college and began dating again. She has been engaged to Wyatt, her best friend, for a while now but if she is honest with herself, she is not happy and can’t see how she ever will be. She does not feel with Wyatt what she felt with Devin all those years ago. She wants to put her own happiness first and set him free.
Devin is completely shocked to receive a letter from Katie. The girl he gave his heart to ten years ago, the only girl he has ever loved. Over the course of a few months these two pour their hearts out to each other via letters, email, face time and on the phone. The love between them just seems to pick up where it left off and grows.
Devin is due to return from his deployment and wants to make plans with Katie. They want marriage and children, they don’t want to waste any more time being apart.
Now if that all happened as planned then I wouldn’t have been turned into a sobbing mess right? Needless to say, lots of things happen in the latter part of the book that were heart wrenching and I could not stop listening until it was finished.
This is one of those books that you recommend to someone and then almost apologise for the way it is probably going to wreck them, muhahahahahaha..
Wow! This was a very thoughtful and emotional book, with characters you can love right away. The story of teenage love lost and then accidentally found a decade later is further enhanced by the military aspects of the hero's story. I fell in love with the male narrator Max Bellmore's voice, by the way. He reminds me of Matthew McConahay's voice! Loved this book and the ending was great.
Too much talk im the second half about 'feelings' - this was repeated endlessly-.we got it after the first 10 tiimes!
"I just love this book,"
I just love this book and being able to listen to it was amazing! I really enjoyed the two they got to narrate it and just thoroughly enjoyed every aspect.
